Ignition/Wiring Problems 95

I have a 1995 Z28, automatic, bone stock, 170k miles.

A shot in the dark, I know, but here goes...

Driving home last night on the interstate, it just died. Crazy thing was that all of the gauges and dash trouble lights went dead. I put it in neutral while still rolling, turned the key off and back on, and it started back up. I put it in gear and all was good. Till today.... (didn't have time to diagnos last night) It did it again on the way to lunch today. This time it would not start back.

Here is what it is doing:

Turn on the key, all electrical components are operational, except for anything on the dash. Gauges, trouble lights, nothing...

When I turn the key to start, the lights on dash come on, and it will crank. It will actually hit for a half second until i let off the key. Then it dies, along with everything on the dash.

I'm hoping that someone has had a similar issue and can give me a heads up on what to check. Ignition switch? Ignition wiring? Pink wire, yellow wire, etc...

I did remove the under dash panels and did a visual check of connections and such. Nothing looked to be wrong.

Thanks in advance for any help that you're able to offer.

I meant to add that I have had issues with the ICM in the past, but once replaced, it was fine. That was a different situation. All of the electrical components and dash were fine. It just wouldn't start...

Sounds pretty typical of the ignition switch.

Thank you very much! That's what I was thinking it might be, but wasn't sure. I apprecitate your step by step instructions. They will help me out tremendously! I haven't looked, but I hope there is a donation link at the bottom of your page. I'll be sure and take care of you.

Thanks again!

Re: Ignition/Wiring Problems 95

Success! I swapped out the switch and all is good. I decided to just drop the column instead of pulling it out. The only problem I had was in doing so, the slip joint between the knuckle and the gear box came apart. Other than that, it wasn't that bad.

Thanks again.

Now for problem #2... I'll drive for 20-30 minutes, interstate and side roads, and turn it off. When I start it back it stumbles like it is loading up on fuel. The SES light comes on (I currently do not have access to a code reader). If I rev it up a little, it will eventually smooth out, but it still runs rough. While it is cold, and even while driving it from being cold till I shut it off, it runs fine. It's only after shutting it off and starting it back after a few minutes that I have this problem. Also, after cruising on the interstate, when I get to the bottom of an exit ramp, it will do the same thing. Some times even stall.... Any ideas?

Reading the trouble code(s) helps point you in a direction to troubleshoot. If you are going to do your own work, invest in a scan solution.
