Ignition key lost

Hello all,

I've lost my ignition key, misplaced somewhere. Can anyone tell me the cheapest way to replace one considering that fact that its got a "resistance" chip embedded in it. I am hoping that I would'nt have to buy a new BCM, and that with the current system I can simply buy a new key. Any ideas as to how to get a replacement?

thanks in advance.

If the ignition lock cylinder has never been changed, a dealer should be able to replace the key based on your VIN. Dealers are never "cheap" though.

Thanks for your post.

2 years ago i had replaced the BCM and key (not sure if cylinder was replaced) from the dealer. Perhaps I should go back to them with my VIN anyway. Keys are from resister value 1 to 9 right? if thats the case one of 9 keys with the correct resistance value should be able to start the car?

Your post sounds like a bad horror flick.

With that in mind, if they only came with nine resistors, then that "sounds" like it would work. Inform us how much it costs when you buy a new one please, iv always heard $100~.

If the dealer replaced the BCM and the lock cylinder, usually they will match it to the original key "cut" unless you specify that you don't want it to match. The keys usually cost about $25 at the local dealers in our area, $10 to access the code and $15 for the key blank and to cut the key. Just be sure you take your title, registration or something that shows ownership to the vehicle, otherwise some dealers will not help you.

I spoke with the small shop that I normally take my camaro to and he said he will come over with a new cylinder+key and fix it. Let's hope it works and I'll let you guys know how it went. Thanks.

just thought I'd post an update. Basically I had to go to GM dealer, told him that I cannot tow the car to the shop. He was kind enough to come to my place after work with a new cylinder and a compatible key (He had the key resistor specs from an old job record where the BCM was replaced). Replaced the cylinder and good to go. The whole thing took just 45 mins. He charged me $200 for everything.
