How much does race fuel go for nowadays at the track?
How much does race fuel go for nowadays at the track?
I don't go to my local drag strip a whole lot, and i was wondering, how much does race gas go for in the northeast? I am in NJ and super around my area is about $3.10 per gal and some times even as low as 2.85. I mean i've never gotten race gas, but just out of curiousity, how much?
Also, whats the highest octane that most race gas pumps go up to? I mean are all the same? or is some race gas 110 oct and some are 113 oct?
And lastly, for anyone that goes to Englishtown Race Way Park, where are the race fuel pumps even located at that track?

Here in ND premium (92 octane) is $3.12 a gallon and on Saturday I put in 2.5 gallons of 100 octane and it was $6 a gallon. This same place also has 110 leaded gas, I'm not sure how much this costs.

I run alcohol so I have no idea what the current cost of race fuel is.
If you need race gas and need to ask the price, you're not a real racer. Nothing like seeing someone build a high compression or power adder engine then detune it because they want to run pump gas in it.
Octane varies with the grade. Not all race gas is the same. VP fuels has a huge selection of fuel available.
Unleaded fuel with a minimum of 96 octane to as much as 99 octane for general use high performance fuel.
Leaded fuel is normally what's considered race gas. Again, there's multiple grades to pick from. The typical race fuel is C12 which is 108 octane. Very high compression race engine or high compression engines with power adders use C14 or C16 which is 114 and 116 octane.
There are fuels that can reach 120 octane. You only need enough octane to eliminate detonation. Running too high an octane will hurt performance if it isn't needed. You don't want to run leaded fuel in a car with a catalytic converter or O2 sensors.

At E'town they sell 100-octane unleaded, and several grades of leaded, up to 110 or 114. I haven't been there in a while, so I don't know the current prices. The pumps are between the pits and the staging lanes. I buy VP Fuels C16 by the drum, and last time it was over $8 a gallon.

I know neither Sunoco Racing Fuels or VP Racing Fuels does. There is a product called C10 from VP, but its 104 (R+M)/2. Their highest octane "street legal" unleaded is 103. Sunoco's highest octane unleaded is their 260 GT+ also rated at 104.
Do not be confused by anyone posting a "research" octane of 110..... that is meaningless with regard to high engine loads. For racing purposes, you need to look a "motor" octane, which can be up to 10 numbers less than the research octane. (R+M)/2 is even of questionable value for racing applications.

I got it at a little no-name shop in Fenton, MI. I've only been there once, but it was just a couple weeks ago. I don't remember the name of the place or the brand of the fuel, but it was advertised as 110 unleaded. I don't know what the octane measurement method was.
