How to find a father's old car???

I'm looking for my father's old 1972 chevelle SS that he bought new that year. Where would I start to even track this car down. I have no VIN and my county clerk said that the picture I have of it and the license plate wouldn't help.

Any Ideas at all would be help.

If you had the Vin you could do a Title Search, but then you need a VIN. Usually you can give the state a plate # and get the vin # of the car it was on, but they may have reused the plate # then it would be inaccurate. Sounds as if your screwed unless you find the vin # somewhere.

Good Luck

I would think you'd definitely need the VIN number. If I remember correctly, CARFAX can give you the ownership information.

Yeah that's the problem I don't have it, my dad says he has somewhere some old papers on some of his old cars...but don't know which one's...he had a challenger...monte..among others along in that time frame. I'm afraid i'm fighting a loosing battle unless I can find out the guy's name he sold it to...then possibly find out who he then sold it to on down the line......then somewhere's along the way someone would have to have the vin

My guess is that the car's either crushed like so many...or the body of it is racing somewhere's.

Thanks for the input though guys....and if i ever find it i'll be lucky i guess.

BTW this is my old time username that I finally got back up and running from the old system. TeelZ96 and RUFST are the same person.

I called the guy last night that my dad said use to know the guy that owned the car....keep in mind that it's been ten years ago tho....he'd forgot his name not to my suprise...but took my # in case he remembered....which probably will never happen...oh well i guess that's the roadblock my family told me about that i'd hit.

Have you called the insurance company that insured the car? You might get lucky and they will still have a record of it.

I was trying to find my old motorcycle. I had no plate and no VIN but the insurance company had both of them. Never did located the bike though......
