Question Ever pulled too hard on the e-brake and break it?

Whoops! I was pulling up hard on the e-brake handle when I parked and it just sprung up quickly and a few pieces of plastic flew out on to the passenger seat!

The brake still works now when I use it but the handle rattles terribly when I am driving. Anyone have this happen to them? Any idea what I broke inside the console and how hard it is to fix?

Thanks in advance
Dave

I broke the cable in my LT1 but nothing came out of the console. Get under there and look.

My e-brake does something like that. It's not actuslly broken, but every so often, I'll pull up and it will "snap" like I boke it, but it works fine.

Come to think of it... isn't there some sort of gear's under the console? Maybe I knocked off a tooth?

Well if the plastic pieces came from under the console... then pull up the console and have a look.

Yeah I am not sure what it came from, but it flew out of there pretty good!

I'll try to remove the console this week and see what it is..

It happens to me about one a year. I think I have broken every ebrake cabe at least once. One time I pulled up an when it broke It slammed into the console and broke a small piece of the console off. Probable the piece of plastic you had in the seat is a piece of console. I don't think there is any plastic on the ebrake assembly.

I've done that too.. but caught it before I broke anything.

In the beginning, it started happening alot. I had a dealership take a look on it, and claimed they fixed it.. Once in a blue moon it still happens.

BTW, when it does, I always put it back down, let go, then engage it again..

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one.. I have actually done this in both of my cars, but I had never seen the shards of plastic fly out like this. I think it must just be from inside the console.

The e-brake still works just fine, it pulls tight now and holds well, but the handle rattles so bad because of the exhaust, it is so annoying.

Sounds just like mine. Only recently started, and has happend maybe once every 2 weeks. So I'm not concernd too much about it.

And yes, I also release the brake and re-engage it again whenever it happens. Startles me every time too lol

Did you ever find out what caused this? I am experiencing the same problem -- every so often the lever will snap up with no resistance at all. Then, if I work the lever down and up again, it seems to catch.

Thanks for any replies.

If you pull the handle fast enough and hard enough it is normal for it to pull to almost vertical. Once you reach a certain point it will feel like the handle releases. The manual tells you to do that to remove the console. If parts came off that is not normal and I would pull off the console to see if you can find what is rattling.

I've never had any trouble like that.
