Dyno cost?

Ok, so there's only one dyno in the state of Alaska and he charges $300/hr with a 2hr minimum charge. So even if i just wanted a baseline pull it would be $600. Insane, and there's no way my car will ever see any time on the rollers at that cost.

I'm just curious what everyone else has paid for dyno time. Is this guy's cost really that far out there?

Re: Dyno cost?

Wayyy wayy out there if you ask me. Most I've ever hear of was $100 for 2 pulls. I've been to a sop that does it for $90, been to one that does it for $70 and also has designated "dyno days" for only $40. That guy is a quack unless he's got the only dyno in the state of Alaska.

Holy ****!!!

Is that for just dynoing your car is it for full dyno tune, maybe? Must be for a full tune.

The most I've ever paid was $30 for 3 pull w/AF ratio included at a dyno day at a local shop last year. Never had a need for a dyno tune.

Re: Dyno cost?

I paid $40 for 2 pulls, at one place then went and had Jeff Creech tune my car and since my car is only bolt ons he only charged $300 for a dyno tune, but for a heads and cam car he charges $400 but thats for as many pulls that are needed to get the tune right. O yea when he tuned my car he made about 8 pulls on it to get all the a/f, and everything else right.

That $600 up by you is just supply and demand, it sucks tho

Yup. A little lesson in Economics 101, i guess. Monopolies are bad. And no, that's not for a full tune. You put your car on the rollers, it's $600 regardless of what you want done. Makes me want to start up a little dyno shop.

I starting to hate Alaska. Not a good place to live if you're into motorsports at all.

Is there a 1/4-mile track there?

Probably full of zambonis though...

Re: Dyno cost?

There's one 1/4 track, one dirt oval and one paved oval. Supposedly there's a road course being built somewhere, but i'm not sure where it is yet. AFAIK, that's all there is up here, but i've only been here for two years.

Re: Dyno cost?

For that price, just skip the dyno pulls. Dynos are really to be used as a tuning tool. Around here, $400 gives you a full dyno tune. I've seen a few dyno days around here where it's like $45 for two pulls, but they were really just GTGs of the shop owner's buddies and people just throwing some money for his time.

I don't think $600 is worth it just to find out what your car lays down on the pavement. Just race it, or wait until you get enough mods and you have to do a full tune.

Otherwise..it's a little cheesy, but you can ping the board with all your mods and details of your car and get some ballpark estimates of how much power you're making. Not all that precise, but lets you know if you're pulling 250 rw or 300 rw.

Re: Dyno cost?

Well, yeah, that's kind of obvious that i'd skip the dyno pulls for that price, i'm not crazy.

Re: Dyno cost?

Yea, there are about 5 dyno's within a 2 hour drive from where I am, and 2 within 30 minutes. Going rates are about $50 first hour, $40 every hour after; plus tuning rates which range from $40/hour to $60/hour depending on the car and goals.

If you're talking base-lining, around here, most places offer Dyno-days where you get like 2-3 pulls, and costs like $30-$50.

Re: Dyno cost?

This is possibly a strange question, but is he talking about a chassis dyno or an engine dyno?
That sounds more like engine dyno prices. That would still be really high, but totally outragous for a chassis dyno.
What was said before does apply though, supply and demand. The only one around can set the price.
