convertible weight reduction question
convertible weight reduction question
ok i dont know if this is even possible or practicle, but couldn't i take out all the things that make the convertible top motorized so it becomes manual? and how much weight do you think i could lose doing this
Re: convertible weight reduction question
I know George Baxter took the complete top hydraulics of his 30th SS convertible, and it was very easy to raise and lower the top manually. One of the steps he took to reduce the race weight from 3,900# (9.04@155MPH) to 3,525# (8.6@160+MPH, but also a few extra HP
).
).
Re: convertible weight reduction question
The convertiable does not weight that much more than a coupe to tear out the motor. Then you will look like an old miata sitting along side the road trying to put the top up will I'm in traffic doing mine. Plus unless you are already running 11's I would not worry about weight reduction with a somewhat stock car. Just my 02.

I always figure when someone asks for info, its best to share the info you have, rather than to pass judgement
Re: convertible weight reduction question
No arugement with that car pulling wheels. But on a stock car it just does not seem to be worth it(yes in my opinion). But I guess if someone is that hard up for it do what you got to do.
Re: convertible weight reduction question
well the thing is if its practicle, it might be easier/cheaper than adding hp im not sure no ones told me yet, and im tight on money, so if its a free mod wtf why not do it, thats why im asking
Re: convertible weight reduction question
I did mine and it saved ~30lbs. The motor/hydrolics in the back are easy. The hydrolic pistons/pins are a little harder, but not bad. once you have the rear plastic panels off, you'll see what you need to do. In total, it took me about an hour and a half and I took my time... I got the added benefit of being able use the wiring left behind for a very cool cutout switch for my Q-tec/borla cutout plate. The top switch works perfectly...
