breather question

I did a search and I see that the stock PCV system is preferred over breathers. The engine I am talking about is in my '35 Ford and I can't deal with the hose running from the passenger valve cover to the throttle body...with after market polished valve covers it will be an eye sore.

Is my only option to remove that hose, cap the TB and use a breather leaving the rest of the PCV system intact? Will I need to add a second breather on the driver's side valve cover or is one enough??

Thanks!

You could build a stainless hose/AN fitting line, that would look 100% better than stock.

Barb fitting to AN hose adapter-->AN 90*, stainless hose, AN 90*, and an AN to hose fitting with a short run of rubber to connect to TB. Or if you don't have the provision for a hole you can have someone TIG AN fittings to the VC's.

That sounds like an option if I must do it that way, but I still don't think that would look as good as a breather and making stainless lines is not cheap...I spent over $100 making up a line to connect the clutch...

Am I sacraficing too much by using breathers and should just suck it up and run the line?

While it is best to keep the stock PCV system intact, removing the vent line from the throttle body, and replacing it with a breather is no big deal. It means a little bit of air is bypassing the MAF and getting into the combustion process, forcing the long term fuel corrections to compensate. But its nothing major. I've been considering going to a breather, but I don't use an MAF, running speed-density on an aftermarket ECU.

On the other hand, you may find that you have an oily film around the breather, that might be more unsightly than the hose.

Thanks Injuneer..I think I'll give the breather a try and see if I get any oily film problems.

Do I just need the one breather on the passenger side?

The stock system only admits clean, filtered air to the passenger side valve cover, so one breather should be adequate.
