Smile BATERRY CORROSION!???? Can it?

Ok so this morning I drove to my a friends house went in and came out in about 30 minutes and turn the key and all I heard was a clunk! It was coming from the starter area!
All lights accesories worket etc...It just wouldnt crank
I assumed it was the starter!
Well I go ahead and swap batteries just to see if for some odd reason it was the batterie..and wham it turns on!
I did notice some corrosion on both posts when I swapped batteries.
COuld it just have been the corrosion?????

Possible that a loose/dirty connection caused the problem. Have the old battery load tested and you will know the answer for sure.

all I did other than the swap was clean off all this white stuff from the baterry terminatls.

Yes, just corrosion can cause that problem. The corrosion provides enough resistance to block the flow of large amounts of current. Lights and stuff don't draw much of a load, compared to the several hundred amps that the starter draws.

I had a situation where the Z wouldnt shift out of first gear and the
car ran like cr@p. A mechanic suggested I clean the battery terminals.
I removed them, cleaned them thoroughly, and tightened them back up.
The problems magically went away.

An easy way to tell when you have a poor connection like that is to open the hood and have someone else turn the key. You will often hear a little pop (arc) and see a poof of smoke at the poor connection. That tells you right where it is.
