Aluminized steel questions

How durable is aluminzed steel? I am about to put alot of money into my aluminized duals to have them run over the axle and i need to know how long the aluminized piping will last? I drive my car in the winter so its subject to the road salt Does anyone know how long it takes to rust, or if it ever does?
Thanks

I might be thinking about something else, but I was told by a muffler shop that that material is the way to go because it does not rust.

It'll rust-just takes longer. If you want it to last, go stainless.

Re: Aluminized steel questions

The exhaust piping may be immune on the outside with the coating, but it can still rot away on the inside from the moisture in the exhaust. Stainless steel is the way to go but it will cost more.

Another vote for stainless here.

Have you ever seen what salt does to aluminum? Put some on your screen door this winter and watch it does. Stainless is the ONLY way to go!

Thumbs up Re: Aluminized steel questions

Most problems with exhaust system rust is from the inside out. Aluminized steel is just a marketing ploy. You want rust resistence stainless steel for longer life exhaust system.

Re: Aluminized steel questions

Aluminized steel is simply mild steel with a very thin coating to act as a sacrificial anode. It will rust away, just not quite as fast as plain mild steel. Aluminized steel will last 18 months to three years in severe conditions, depending on metal thickness. If you drive in salt and you do lots of short trips (which allows moisture to remain in low spots), expect a short life from your components. If your system gets hot and stays hot long enough that there is little condensate forming it will last longer.
