Air Foil

Would the air foil that is on my stock throttle body cause the car to run any differently than stock? Its always ran a little rough but nothing major. I was told though the after market air foil on there is covering a hole or something that leads to the idle air sensor or something? figured I would ask. Also I know when it comes to MPG highway is the best to check it out but would extremly short trips like 2 miles back and forth to work cause it to be even crappier? like 13mpg instead of say 16 in the city?

There is a hole between the throttle bores for the idle air passage. That's where the air goes to reach the idle air controller. There is no idle air sensor. If you block that hole, it could prevent the IAC from accurately controlling the idle speed.

So it would be good to remove the air foil then correct injunner?

And as for the MPG will that short of trips really cause it to drop even more than normal? I know when I had to work out at a site which is about 8miles or so I was getting like 15-16mpg.

Without seeing the air foil, its hard to tell if it affecting anything. It should have a hole in it, at least on the lower area, and even a second hole in the upper area.

There are actually 3 holes between the throttle blades. At the top, there's a hole that supplies air to the hose that goes to the valve cover, for the PCV system. Air flows out that hole, into the chamber on top of the TB, then thru the hose to the valve cover.

In the bottom section, there's a small hole that allows idle air to flow directly to the manifold, behind the TB. Then there's another hole on the bottom, that allows air into the idle air passage, where the IAC motor controls the idle RPM. Blocking the lower holes may make idle control a problem, but if the PCM is able to control the idle, without opening the AIC way up aboe 50 counts, its probably not affecting anything. I don't see how it would cause a rough idle.

Take it off and see if it idles less rough. Its not worth a lot of HP:

As far as fuel mileage, yes, short trips eat more fuel. When the coolant isn't hot, the PCM richnes the mixture for cold start, and gradually leans it out as the engine warms up. Just like the choke on a carb. IF you only run for 5 minutes or so, is running very rich because its cold. Going to use more fuel. Can it reduce it from 16 to 13..... probably, if there are never any longer trips mixed in. When I drove the freeways of CA to work, I got 23-25mpg ion mixed driving. Driving in stop and go commuting traffic in NJ, it dropped to 18. But they were still long trips. I never was in a situation where all I did was drive 2 miles at a time.

Thanks for the info on the air foil. I think I may take it out to see if the rough idle clears up.

As for the mileage I live in San Antonio and never really go across town. I live on base so Id have to say 80% of a tank of gas is going back and forth to just work a few miles down the road. I am getting around 160-170 miles on a tank before I fill it up around a 1/4 left. So most of my trips are pretty short. Although the coolant does get hot since its so hot here.

Thanks for all the help and advice my friend.

Well I looked at taking the air foil off but it looks to be riveted in? Not sure how the thing is on there. There is a small hole on the bottom side of it though. I guess that means its ok to be there correct? Funny though I did notice a previous owner did the TB bypass for it lol. Never noticed that til today. Wish I had some TB cleaner though it was a bit dirty.

You need to take the top cover of the throttle body off. Its the black plate and its held on by several allen head screws. The airfoil should be held on by an allen head bolt that threads into a wedge shaped nut that's located under the throttle body cover. HTH

Ive seen under the throttle body plate. I saw no nut there. As for the screw thats in the front I looked at that. If it was an allen head bolt its not now because the center is circular and has no sides like an allen wrench would fit.
