Unhappy Ac problem

I have a 1994 z28 and about a month ago my low coolant light was coming on,but every time we checked, it was okay. My car would try to overheat when sitting in traffic. I took it to the shop and had the radiator flushed,a new thermostat put in, and replaced the sensor. Thought I had that problem solved, but now I'm thinking it was overheating because of my ac fan was not coming on. My ac quit blowing cold air around the same time. I took it back to the shop and they put 2 cans of freon in it. Still wouldn't blow cold. Then the man said it was because he needed to reprogram my computer. I watched him and all he did was disconnect my battery and left the cables off for a little while and then when he put them back on the ac started working. After about 3 weeks it's not blowing cold air again. I tried disconnecting the cables again from the battery and it will work for about 5 minutes and then it stops blowing cold again. Any ideas on what the problem might be? I was told that it may be the compressor but I'm not sure. Don't want to spend money replacing it, if that's not the problem. The man at the shop said it doesn't have a leak. Also somebody else told me that there may be a filter in the ac line and it may just be stopped up. Does anybody know if this is true and if so where is this filter located?

Re: Ac problem

Where were you checking the coolant level - in the radiator, or in the reservoir?

The fact that the AC system is losing freon should not cause the engine to overheat.

Re: Ac problem

We checked it in both, the radiator and reservoir. That's really not the problem I'm having now. The ac is the problem. It won't keep blowing cold air. It's not losing freon. Is there a filter and if so could it be stopped up? If so where is it located? I know pontiac & Fords have these in line type filters to keep particles from compressor and lines from getting back into compressor. I just don't know if chev. have them.
