I've read that cars with the A4 trans in third gear will be able to go 120 or so...this isn't the case for me, at 100mph I'm just before redline...I'm deep in the yellow...as far as I know I have factory 3.23s back there, would this indicate I have 3.73s? I may have to pull off the cover and check. Any input would help.

 

Have you ever tried this gear calculator?? It's pretty helpful.

Are you sure you're burying 3RD gear doing ~100 mph?? I know that with 2.73's, you'll be hitting ~100 mph by the top of 2ND gear.

What are your cruising RPM's, doing ~70 mph, in OD (4th) ??

If you're truly hitting ~100 mph by redline in 3rd gear, then it sounds more like your car has 4.10's!! (ask me how I know).

 

I'm burying it...its at about 5600 when I looked at everything (didn't want to crash so I didn't stare) I get 200 miles per tank to which would explain alot...We've had this conversation before...I may have to pull the cover off. I run out of steam once I hid OD for the most part too.

 

200 miles / tank? Sounds like 4.10's!!!

You don't have to pull the cover ... just get a buddy to watch for 1 full turn of the wheels while you turn the driveshaft ... count how many turns of the driveshaft it takes ... that will be your answer.

 

Ya i would think that you have 4.10s...i have them an i max out 3rd gear at 110@6500 rpms, If i start trapping higher ill just remove the 6600 rpm rev limiter because the rebuilt motor with new rod bolts should be good to 6800 rpms or so.

 

110@6500 rpms is NOT 4.10s, sorry. I trap higher then that with room to spare.

Sure it is. You're probably running taller tires?

Fine, according to the gear calculator, ~110 mph should be at ~5900 RPM, but factor in some converter slip, and the motor could be turning over 6000 RPM to get ~110 mph. ALSO, factory tachs may not be 100% accurate.

 

I'm gonna go jack it and spin the DS, I'll let you guys know whats up with them....4 turns is 4.10s right?

 

Ya i think that my factory tach must be off or something...i heard that they are off by 400rpms on some, i thought that 110 was alittle low.

 

I just came up a little shy of 4 DS rotations per 1 wheel rotation. It was a solid 3 and 8/10ths on the driveshaft per wheel rotation. 3.73 or 4.10?
