96 Z28 Flaky Guages
96 Z28 Flaky Guages
Hello everyone!
I have a 96 Z28 I bought about 6 weeks ago. Previous owner swapped out original engine with a LT1 from a police Caprice, and pretty much mickey moused the whole install, sensors unplugged, wrong for the Z, tons of missing nuts etc. Car runs great and I have corrected several issues, all minor.
One the only thing I really want to finish from this conversion is the guages. Voltage reads 18+, but ok at the alt and battery (14). I replaced both coolant sensors, but the guage sensor still flakes out randomly.
When I bought it, the Oil Pressure guage was maxed out and then some. Turns out the plug wasn't even connected. I connected it and got it to zero out on key on, but maxed out when started. I replaced it thinking it was for a light and not a guage. Now it seems to be working, but not correctly. At Idle, the check gages light comes on and needle reads at the top of the red. At 1500 rpm, needle reads approx 20, and at 2000 rpm reads approx 40.
Fuel and Tach appear to be working correctly.
My brother thinks it may be a bad ground, but I'm not sure where to look.
Cant wait to put this behind me and start tinkering with other more interesting things

The coolant temp gauge sounds like a wiring problem - intermittent. The oil gauge sounds like you may just have low idle pressure. What viscosity oil are you running? Have you checked the pressure with a reliable mechanical gauge?
Thanks for the reply in Injuneer! I put Mobil 1 oil and filter in it. I'm pretty sure I used 5w-30. I did pick up a mechanical oil pressure guage last night to test, but I havent had a chance to hook it up yet.
