96 SS - LT4 project need info

I bought a non-running 96 SS and a non-running LT4 and I thought it could make a really fun package. But I need some info. From what I have seen, all of LT4's seem to be std transmission models. I have an auto. Will a ECU from a LT4 Corvette 6-spd. work? Or is it best to get my own ECU reprogrammed? If I go the reprogram route, how can I get all of the data I need, such as shift point info, etc.? On rebuilding the motor, can I get correct gaskets, rings, etc from aftermarket sources or do I need to get OEM? Or can you even get OEM parts, such as the "positive twist" piston rings, and special head gaskets? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 96 SS - LT4 project need info

Thanks. I’ll check them out when I get ready for that part.

I’m upset today. I have been taking the LT4 apart. The motor was supposed to be "running good, no smoke, checked compression. All good". When it arrived, I got worried when #6 plug showed oil fouling and the exhaust port was oily. But since then I have found out that they flat out lied about everything. #1 cyl. was at BDC and had water standing to the top of the cylinder. Water was also in #2 and #5 cylinders and it looks all of the cylinders show at least some condensation damage issues. It was very obvious that this is not recent water damage. All of the intake runners in the heads and intake manifold are very heavily corroded. It looks like they had been under water for quite a while. As I went further, I found the rod journal for #3 and #7 cylinders had water damage and it looks pretty bad. The oil port in the crank for #3 rod was full of rust paste. The rod journal for 4 & 8 also show some water damage but not nearly as much as the 3/7 journal. Also, a yellow/orange paste of what looks like oil and water mixture covered all of the roller lifters. I didn’t have my puller for the harmonic balancer and I had already had enough bad news for one day so I packed it in. Tomorrow I will get a look at the main journals. It sure would be nice if you could trust Internet sales.
