96 Camaro RS 3800

Hey guys, I'm tired of not having a working horn on my baby. Every time I put a horn fuse in and press the horn it burns it up so I'm thinking I have an electronic problem or the horn relay is bad. Now I've checked online to see where this relay is located with no luck. There aren't any pictures posted of my specific car. Ls1 horn relay is displayed online but not my car. I've looked underneath the steering column which I'm pretty confident this is where it is located at but cannot for the life of me find it. So I guess my question is where is the horn relay located on this car and how do I find it? Because I've looked up under there already and could not find that thing. If I have an electronic issue, how much would that be to fix as well?

thanks for reading,
Rhett

On my 94 the relay is in the under dash convenience center. In 96 they may have moved the relay. The 96 factory service manual indicates the location as "under LH side I/P mounted to tie bar". It references page 8A-201-8, Figure 15, but that diagram does not show the horn relay.

Electrical diagram of horns is on page 8A-40-0

The four relay wires are two orange, one dark green and one black.

LH side = left side (Drivers)
I/P = Instrument Panel

The 1997 manual gives the same location for the horn relay as the 1996 manual, under the LH side of the I/P, mounted to the tie bar. If this correct, then the 1997 manual gives its location under the dash on the left side on the column as shown in the attached pdf.

That pic is accurate up through 1995. In 1996 they moved the alarm feature to the body control module. No longer needed what is called the “convenience center”. I suspect that they left the horn relay near that location, tacking it onto whatever they are calling the “tie bar”. If I had to guess, I would say the “tie bar” is the shiny black metal bar that is bolted right above the hazard flasher, and and runs diagonally to under the bottom of the steering column. The bar is directly behind the letter “H” in the “Hazard flasher” label, and the letter “o” in “Horn relay” label.

Look for a relay similar in appearance to the one In Shoebox’s photo, but attached to the tie bar.

Doesn't matter if your car is an RS, Z28, SS, TransAm, etc. The horn system is the same for any given year.
