1987 Trans Am info???

I just bought a 1987 Trans Am, I don't know much about it. The guy said it has an lt1 out of a vette. it has flowmasters not sure what kind. It's TPI i have a little work to do... Alternator, idle speed regulator, oil pressure censor and the interior is trashed. any tips on parts or anything else would be great.

P.s I don't know much about engines but wanna learn.

If it is TPI, then it is not an LT1. Is the distributor at the back of the motor like a typical SBC or in front down by the water pump? Is the water pump belt driven?

Definitely not an LT1 out of anything. Looks like a stock 3rd Gen TPI engine. LT1 would look like this, without the red powdercoat on the intake manifold.

Look at your VIN, using this "decoder". The 8th position in the VIN will tell you what engine the car had when it left the factory.

that is most definatley a tpi.
the car even has the stock exhaust manifolds on it. my educated guess would be its a bone stock tuned port injection car.
and every redneck with a camaro or trans am thinks they have a "vette" engine. the corvette stock has a more aggressive camshaft, better exhaust manifolds and a few more goodies.

There is a portion of the VIN number stamped on the engine block. It indicates the year of the car it was originally installed in, and the last 6 digits that would match the sequential production number of the car it was installed in. Look and see if it matches the VIN affixed to the chassis.

We have a forum for the "3rd Gen/L98 Engine Tech". You might want to post your questions about the engine there.

Any idea how hard it would be to convert to an LT1?
