Tune Up Question: New Opti or Cap and Rotor
Tune Up Question: New Opti or Cap and Rotor
I am planning for a future tune-up, and I am curious as to whether or not I should plan on replacing just the cap and rotor or replace the Opti altogether. Replacing the entire Opti seems like an expensive option (looking at Petris Optis) for a simple tune-up. I have the original Opti installed currently and there's no indication that it's having any issues.
Should I just leave it be and replace plugs, wires, etc.?
Thanks

Re: Tune Up Question: New Opti or Cap and Rotor
How many miles on those components?
Do you have any problems that you feel may be attributed to the Opti? If not, leave it alone.
Have you inspected the plugs and wires? Platinum plugs have a long life, iridium seem to be good for 100,000 miles. If the plugs are clean, not excessive miles, and are maintaining the specified gap they don’t need to be replaced. Wires are a different story. Easy to burn them on the exhaust, headers, etc.

Re: Tune Up Question: New Opti or Cap and Rotor
No issues that point to an opti problem, just looking at doing normal tune up stuff eventually. There's 57k on the original opti, but the wires, and I assume plugs, have been changed at least once. I have the service records from the original owner, so I plan on looking through them again to be sure.
There's a miss at idle when warm, but nothing severe. It's certainly drivable, just annoying. I plan on shimming the ICM so that it's off the head per the instructions on Shoebox's site. It's an easy mod and it certainly won't hurt.
What I don't want to do is throw parts at a minor problem that may require a simple fix. From my experience, it's best to start with the basics and eliminate the obvious things first before going down any rabbit holes.
I appreciate the advice, Fred.

Re: Tune Up Question: New Opti or Cap and Rotor
The concept of the “tune up” is somewhat outdated. As a seriously advanced senior citizen, I remember the points, plugs, wires, etc. routine from decades ago. Follow the maintenance schedule in the Owner's Manual.
