opti corrosion and rust

well i was taking the car for a quick spin and fill up the tank while i was out and i noticed when driving a slight stumble or miss at about 2500rpms. so i pull in to the service station and fill it up and then get the good ole crank over but no start. got it home and it had stored a code 16. pulled the opti harness, it was completely corroded and green. after installing a new harness it changes nothing so i check over everything else one more time and pull the opti and open it up. the cap and rotor are badly coroded and there is a lot of rust particle buildup even in the cap area. also the rotor screws are rusted and 2/3 of one of the washers is missing. the opti is a brand new vented gm unit with less than 200 miles on it but it has been on the car for about 12months, but has never seen rain. i did not open it up when i got it and the box was not wet but i am guessing it must have been exposed to moisture somewhere along the way. also i am running a methanol kit with my procharger and had the vent ports capped off for fear of boosting meth in the opti. my question is what is causing the rust and corrosin and will the check valves in the vent lines hold the boost and meth back if i were to hook them up? i could most likely reuse it after cleaning it good but then if it rusts again i am back in the same situation.

The vent system is there to remove the ozone generated by the high voltage discharge. Ozone is corrosive. By capping off the vent system, you may have accelerated the process.

What Injuneer said. Without the vent lines, the opti won't last long as it needs the lines to cool the unit and to evacuate the ozone and other contaminants. Also, the vent line should have check valves in it to control the airflow and normally the vent lines are connected to the suction side of the s/c, not the pressure side.
