Icm won't ground with heat sink
Icm won't ground with heat sink
I have been through 4 icm's the past 6 months.
One of them I know for a fact was my old one from before!
I think I killed one for not using the heat sink
Anyways my icm bracket was stripped so I put nuts on the back to draw the bolt in. I ended up bending the bracket upper lip out and that is the only reason I think why everytime I try to reinstall the heat sink the icm doesn't ground????
I went to a different store and bought another icm and the car would not start with the heat sink on. Took it off car fires right up
So could somebody help explain to me another option or an idea of fixing it?

Re: Icm won't ground with heat sink
If your heat sink is bent, it won't be able to make even contact with the ICM (which is important). Tightening the ICM down on a bent heat sink may damage the ICM or cause the electronics inside to flex and break connections. I'd get a new heat sink to start with.
BTW, the ICM grounds through the harness-not the heat sink. The heat sink is there to dissipate heat and thermal compound is used between the ICM and sink.

Re: Icm won't ground with heat sink
Glad you responded. The bracket is bent not the heat sink. But when I have the heat sink on the car won't start but when I take it off and just put the icm on bracket it starts and does not die.
I always do the test on your site every time this happens and everything checks out. So I am sending my ecu out to get rebuilt for more reasons than this issue.
Thanks for explaining the ground thing but something isn't right and I'm missing something

Maybe the black wire in your ICM harness connector is not providing the required ground. Check the connector pins, check the continuity of the black wire to ground.
