Hot Start Slow Crank [solved]

Hi,

I just wanted to share that a new starter fixed my hot start problem. I suspected the ICM, or ignition coil and replaced both, assuming they were old and heat soaked from the driver side head, even after the ICM mod.

Wasn't the case. The starter had been on there since 2002, was weak and didn't seem to have the volts/current to crank properly when hot, and the start cycle behaved like a drained battery.

In case anyone else runs into similar symptoms check the starter. I swapped ICM and coil because it was easy and pretty cheap, but ended up not being the culprit. Cleaned up wire terminals, R&R'd the starter and it's good to go. Even cold starts sound healthier now.

If you hear a stampede, think horses, not zebras.

In other words: a starting issue resolved by replacing the starter? You don’t say!

I kid. But also, yeah — don’t skip the obvious stuff!

True 😄 it was the hot start barely turning over that had me thinking ICM or IC. Now I've got a couple used spares. That bracket assembly with the ICM mod and thermal paste needed cleaning and new paste anyway 😅
