fuel pump is going?

so the extended cranking is getting worse and more frequent. i can still prime the pump a few times and have a normal start, but the pressure seems to be bleeding off much quicker now. i understand this is the check ball in the fuel pump that has failed. from what i have read here it is my understanding that i must replace the whole pump to fix the issue?

so i pulled up the carpet over the back wondering if the previous owner had changed it using the trap door method. this is what i found.

the trap door method was certainly used but they didnt exactly complete the job and just left the hole uncovered i am a smoker so this was just a slight bit unnerving.

you can also see it looks as tho there is a slight leak there. is that at all common and what should i do to make sure to prevent this?

final question is what are your recommendations as to what to replace the pump in there with? the brands i have heard of are walboro and racetronix. apparently the racetronix needs its own wiring harness too. are these units plug and play replacable?

thanks for any help as this is a new adventure for me to replace a fuel pump.

Looks like just the vent is slightly seeping. Its not pushed on the hose all the way. Either of those pumps will work fine. Just blow off the dirt before you open it up. Your job is pretty easy because someone cut it before you. I would make a lid and remove the part that is bent over.

That seeping is fine. That's just part of the EVAP system (or fuel tank vent, I forget which one). That line does not see high pressure.

Yes, it has been changed, no other reason to do that. You will find lots of ways to cover that hole, sloppy work on the part of the PO. The Racetronix pump is a Walbro unit. The wiring harness is key to long life for a high performance pump. The stock wiring harness is marginal for the stock pump, when you increase the current draw you need the external wiring harness. Both Racetronix and Casper make an external harness; I prefer the Racetronix but the Casper will also work. They are PNP.
