fuel pressure questions???
fuel pressure questions???
i have a 1996 z28 no mods i just hooked up a gauge to the schrader valve
when i turn key in on position it reads 22 and holds there when i start car it reads 32pds and holds there , (i didnt try to drive with gauge on car ) when i shut car off the fuel pressure holds at 32
i tryed searching and found pressure should be at 41-47 +or-3pds
so heres my question is the 32 pds a sign of a weak pump getting ready to go if so could it cause an intermitent stalling problem reason i ask is because i've had some stalling issues since i bought car ,when car is running it runs fine with plent of power ,it has a new fuel regulator i also changed the fuel filter

You have to check the fuel pressure with the engine running, vacuum compensation line off the fuel pressure regulator. That's when the spec is 41-47psi (no +/-....). Then reattach the vacuum line, and the pressure should drop proportional to intake manifold vacuum, or about 6-8psi on a stock cam. Now tape the gauge to the windshield, and take it out on the road, up to max power/RPM. Should not drop below 40psi at WOT.
A pump that is only putting up a max of 32psi is not within specs, and needs to be replaced. This assumes you've ruled out a faulty fuel pressure regulator, weak voltage to the pump, etc. If that's as high as the pressure gets, you're injectors are delivering 15% less fuel than they are supposed to, so the PCM is being forced to extend the injector pulse widths, using the long term fuel corrections, to make up for the inadequate fuel flow. In effect, its like running with ~21 #/HR injectors.

thanks ,i didnt try unhooking regulator hose because i just put it in and it has no miles ,but i guess it could still be bad wouldnt be the first time i put a bad part in . i' ll give that a try and see what the driving test brings ,with a low reading of 32 wouldnt the car run bad ?it has lots of power i'm wondering if ma gauge could be off it doesnt feel as if its staving for gas but this being my first camaro i just dont know ,this car has me pulling my hair out when i bought it the car ran mint ,i drove it less then a wk not even 50 miles and looks like a might need a fuel pump,my a/c compressor is acting like its ready to go and i just noticed the old owner has some crazy wirring going to the fan ,so forgive me if my question sound a little stupid i'm just getting desperate ,i have no problems putting money in car i just want it to run like it should
It might run fine at 32psi. As noted in the first response, that pressure causes the injectors to flow 15% less fuel than they are supposed to. But the PCM can use the long term fuel corrections (based on O2 sensor feedback) to add as much as 20% extra pulse width/fuel.
