best fuel pump ?
best fuel pump ?
The fuel pump in my 94 is bad (check valve) and needs to be replaced. I know this is a PITA job and want to do it right with good parts. What is the best pump to use (car is all stock) and what is the best source ? Thanks in advance.
Re: best fuel pump ?
x2- I know I replaced the fuel pump in my '95 many years ago and I can't remember the brand I used... it was a kit that came with all the associated lines and stuff. I want to say it was a mild upgrade from the stock pump but as the OP said, my engine is also stock so I'm more looking for quality than an upgrade.
Re: best fuel pump ?
Ive always bought pumps from Racetronix.com. Kit always has everything you need. Used to be Walbro pumps but they had a few issues a while back as there were some Chinese immitations that hit the market.
Re: best fuel pump ?
Anybody have part numbers for any brand?
If I go to Advance Auto's web site, it says ACDelco part number is EP378 and it's $88. Then I go to Amazon and an EP378 is only $53 but the Amazon fitment thing says it does not fit LT1 Camaro.
The customer reviews on Advance's site indicate it's not an exact fit. I don't care if it's exactly the same as long as it is a legit replacement part that's not going to require a hack job to get it to work.
And/or if you know of a cheaper place to buy, I'm all ears. Finances currently require the cheapest route possible but I still want a name brand.

Re: best fuel pump ?
EP378 is for the V6 , you never mentioned your vehicle , no signature ? I would go with a Delco or Delphi since you are stock. Mine is 18 years old and still going. Walbro has some good 5.7 L pumps around $100.00 range, but you don't need a 255 LPH pump for a stock setup, it'l work but may cost more. Ebay has a few but I'd shy away from anything that looks to good to be true. At $50.00 it will probably be made in China..Summit also has pumps. If you are a 5.7 then cost will be higher than the V6 pumps you have been viewing.
Re: best fuel pump ?
Yeah 1997 Camaro SS = V8 man! (From my sig...)
But that's just it- I'm not new to the Interweb thingie, but I cannot find a Delphi or Delco part number for the V8 Camaro/Firebird in either LT1 or LS1 years. Autozone and Advance Auto web sites give the pump-only for the V6 models only, and I've found a few bucket/pump/sender complete assemblies for the V8 models but those are upwards of $300 and all I need is the pump. Just the pump.
Please feel free to tell me I'm doing something really stupid and missing it, but I can't find it, not even on the Delco and Delphi sites. They don't list a pump for V8 Camaro/Firebird.
Honestly though for $100 if the Ractronix or Wallbro units are as good as an OEM part that's not much more than what I was expecting to pay for a Delco OEM pump...

Re: best fuel pump ?
Kind of reporting back that little luck I've had-
I called ACDelco and they don't list a replacement 'pump only' for LT1 cars. The complete 'Fuel Tank and Pump Module Assembly' is the whole ball of wax that replaces the entire assembly inside the tank, and the cheapest I found it was $243 on Amazon. FLS1077 is the Delco part number for it.
The Racetronix kit comes with the pump, upgraded wiring, flex tube, and sock, etc, and is 255gph so even if your car is stock you'd have it upgraded for future mods. It's about $210 depending on which supplier you buy from. Racetronix, as far as I can tell, does not offer customer service directly, and their web site looks like it was designed by a starving college student in 1998. Reviews are very positive as far as the product quality though. Kit part number is RFPK-003 for LT1 cars.
That's all I've got. I did find a few cheapo ebay 'pump only' replacements, but for $30 and being brand names I'd never heard of, I wouldn't use one myself.
Really seems like I should be able to simply replace with OEM parts but that does not seem to be the case.

Re: best fuel pump ?
Man you'r right the Delco pumps are way up there $$. If it were me I go for the Walbro, they seem to be working OK around the forums. Here is a brief description of LT1 pumps. LT1 F-body and B-body fuel pump kit . You can search around on Walbro part number F20000169 , it's higher volume than you need , but that won't hurt. It draws more current, but with a stock setup I don't see any need to go for a HD wiring setup. Amazon has pump only for $93.00 w/free shipping. You may want an install kit with filter, hoses, bucket glue, etc for a complete job.
Re: best fuel pump ?
I ended up ponying up for the whole Racetronix assembly:
Racetronix - FLT1 Fuel Pump Kit - Kit Configuration Page
(Although I ordered it from Thunder Racing...)
$209.00
I can survive another month on Ramen noodles. And toast. It's like getting a free weight loss program with your fuel pump kit!!!
But, I still have one question... in reading threads about pump failure troubleshooting, a lot of people talked about their check valve going bad. And, by 'check valve', I can only assume they're talking about that little rubber flap at the bottom of the pump bucket assembly? Mine looks fine, but given the commotion about it going bad I want to replace it now. Yet, the Racetronix kit doesn't appear to include it and I know from hitting the parts stores that I wasn't able to find any singular piece-parts for inside the tank. ??? It's got to be a 10-cent item.

Re: best fuel pump ?
Always just assumed the check valve was a ball/spring type setup internal to the pump. However I have never actually had one apart. Valve has to hold 45 Lbs of pressure so I doubt it's a rubber flap.
Re: best fuel pump ?
Some of the parts descriptions talk about the check valve at the bottom of the bucket too, and I think I was criss-crossing the two things. The rubber check valve at the bottom of the bucket keeps the bucket full so the pump is never 'dry', but the check valve inside the pump itself is what actually holds fuel pressure.
Two different things with the same name, I think...
Re: best fuel pump ?
Just a quick heads up if anyone else is about to order a pump...
I ordered from Thunder Racing on Monday, got no confirmation. Called Tuesday, got no reply. (You actually have to leave a message if the lines are busy, you can't even hold if you'd prefer to. I left a voicemail, got no return call.)
Called them again Wednesday, they said they'd have an email to me asap Thursday morning with both a tracking number and an order summary, but assured me there is no issue or backorder. No contact from them today again.
Called them again today (Thursday) and had to leave yet another message. It's past close of business today so I know I won't hear from them til tomorrow at the earliest.
Tomorrow is Friday and it will mark 5 business days since I placed my order, with absolutely zero communication from Thunder Racing. If they don't respond by morning I'm going to call my credit card company and see if I can have the transaction stopped so I can order elsewhere.
Epic fail. Zero chance of having the car on the road for the weekend.
