95 Formula Fuel Pump
95 Formula Fuel Pump
Approximately 2 years ago, had to replace the fuel pump on my 1995 Firebird Formula. We decided to do the trap door method, and it wasn't too terribly difficult. Car ran fine for a few months.
Now the car wont start again, and there's no noise coming from the fuel pump when it's supposed to be priming. Checked all fuses, replaced the relay, fuel pump is 2 years old, and ran for maybe a few hours in those short months it was running. Car is 100% garaged, no critters, etc.
Where should I look next? It has new gas, all good fuses, brand new relay, checked all the wire connections. The only thing I really haven't done is hit each wire with a voltmeter, or replace the pump again...
Thanks!

Re: 95 Formula Fuel Pump
Did you try powering the pump with 12 volts to the fuel pump prime connector?

What brand pump did you buy? The market is loaded with poor quality Chinese counterfeits.

I'm honestly not sure what brand. I picked it up at my local O'Reilly Auto Parts store. I believe it has a life-time warranty.
Re: 95 Formula Fuel Pump
The prime connector bypasses the relay. You wire it direct from the battery +, no ignition switch involved.
Your last check would be at the connector near the rear axle. Key on, 12 volts between the gray wire and black wire. If no 12 volts across those two, check continuity of the ground (black) wire.

Re: 95 Formula Fuel Pump
After failing the bypass test, I decided to call OReilly to see if I had a warranty on the fuel pump. They stated this particular part number is no longer stocked, due to many issues. With that said, I took the whole thing out and looking to swap it for a "newer, upgraded" fuel pump.
One questionable part, is the fuel pump sending unit. On the top is plug in that goes from the rear axle to the top of the sending unit (yellow plug). On the other side (that goes into the hole/tank) there's the black connector with a gray, black and purple wire coming out of it. Mine seems to "wiggle" a little bit, is that normal? I asked them to order a new sending unit, just so I could compare. Mine is original, so I'm almost wanting to replace it to avoid any issues in the future.

Re: 95 Formula Fuel Pump
Replaced the pump, and the sending unit (only cost me an additional $20). Got it all put back together and it started right up!
Fast forward 2 weeks later, and the car wont start again. Literally started up every try two weeks ago. Backed it out of the garage, washed it, pulled it back inside.
Any suggestions? Im at a loss, dont even know where to begin at this point.
