Turbo Cam Advance
Turbo Cam Advance
I'm looking to order a new camshaft for my turbo setup pretty quickly here. I'm not exactly sure how much Advance I should have ground into it. From what I'm told the more advance the more you lower the torque peak.
I'm curious to see what everyone else has and/or what advice is out there.
I'm only looking to spin my Stock iron headed LT1 to 6k.
I'm going with a comp cams 218/230 - 114 by the way.
Thanks!

Most of the preground comp cams I've seen (CC305, CC306, etc.) have 4 degrees of advance built in.
I've been playing with the old Desk Top Dyno and it seems that only putting in 2 degrees of advance seems to keep the down low similar, but gives a 15hp boost up at top end.
I guess 2-4 seems to be the norm. Maybe I should split the difference and go with 3 and be happy.
Oh, and just incase somebody doesn't know you can find advance ground in by
advance = (LSA - Intake Lobe peak)
It all goes back to the IVC and how it relates to DCR. For instance, I was running an IVC of 46, but later advanced the cam so that its 42. It helped noticeably. However, if your compression is higher, then you may not need a number that low to get adequate off-boost response.
BTW, I've found that the factory grind is +/-2 due to variations in the grind, drive pin, timing set, and block, so you need a degree wheel to accurately set this.

Running that 224/236 114 cam through my little calculator says that you went from a 0 degree advance to a 4 degree advance.
I'm running a stock longblock, so 10.5:1 compression. I'm not too worried about the low end stuff, but nice idle and good gas mileage would be a plus. I guess its just a matter of how much top end I'm willing to get rid of. I keep going back and forth.
You do make a good point about the stuff being in accurate unless you degree it in percisely. There's nothing like trying to make a percision shot with a shotgun.

With 10.5/1, I'd run it straight up (0 advance). That'll improve mileage a little, add some top end, and maybe even help with detonation.

Well, I just ordered my cam. Here's what I got
07-000-8 LT1 3034/3036 HR114+2
218/230 @ 0.050" 114 LSA 112 Intake Center Line 2 Degrees of advance
0.555 Lift with 1.6 Rockers Intake
0.540 Lift with 1.52 Rockers Exhaust (I have a split set)
It should have much better idle and driveability than my 230/236 112 cam
This is on stock iron heads and a stock longblock.
