overboosting like crazy

I put a 5lb spring in my wastegate and have just begun tuning the car. I took it out and got my cruise tune setup and decide to give it some rpm, mind you this was only about 80% throttle by the time I hit 4k or so boost went flying by 5 psi and was going past 10 when I let out. I have 1/4 inch vacuum line going from the intake with a T going to the bov and wastegate.

Yikes! Where do you have your boost reference? The intake manifold or the compressor outlet?

Intake, i took one of the stock nipples off and put a 1/4 nipple instead, the BOV works perfectly, so i dont think it's a problem with the reference, i think it might be a wastegate issue. I just dont know what could be wrong, do you think it needs a separate reference?

My Turbosmart diagram for my waste gate shows you can hook up one nipple on the WG to the compressor outlet and the other nipple to the intake manifold. I'll look for the .pdf and send it to you.

Either the wastegate is too small

or its not working - ie ref line leaking, hooked up wrong etc.

BTW, are you hooked to the side port or top port on the gate?

This is a tial-like wastegate, the side port is supposed to be hooked to boost reference, and the top port is for adding air to increase the boost, it's supposed to be open when you're using the spring only.

Alright so I checked my connections and everything seemed solid so I tried to wiggle the nipple on the wastegate and I was able to move it. I tightened it up before, but tried not to overtighten b/c it seems somewhat fragile. I tightened it up a good amount and took the car out, now it holds around 8psi, havent pulled all the way to redline, but it definitely doesnt keep going like it did before. Jon I looked into the other problem, but everything looked perfect.
