NOOO oil pump faliure

My oil pump is not kicking out the 40-50psi under boost any longer. I noticed that it was at 25psi under boost:eek I got it home cut the filter and found small flakes in the filter. Im assuming its bearings. I have a small rattle in the rear of the motor which increases with rpm, maybe pickup tube? I should know soon.

Besides this the motor ran stealth, soo im not sure im going to re-ring the thing. Im currently using the standard volume pump, but considering the high volume because I rev to 7200. I have hurd pros and cons with high volume what are your thoughts?

Depends on how the motor is set up. There is no point in a high volume pump if a stock size pump will maintain the desired pressure. For use at 7,200rpm, I'd like to see 60psi. You will need to install the right pressure relief spring to see this pressure. Will a standard volume pump orduce 60psi at 7,200rpm? Depends on the bearing clearances. If it will, you are just wasting hp and heating up the oil by using an excessively large pump.

On my setup we increased the bearing clearances this year, so I opted for a high volume pump to maintain the desired pressure. But most motors do not need this, if they are set up with standard clearances simply changing the relief spring will produce the desired pressure if it is not adequate with the standard spring.

After talking with fasttimes and Duttweiler about my bottom end buildups they recomended going one of 2 ways with my turbo bottom end setup... Both are not cheap but supporting oil for 2 turbos and your motor is quite a bit IMO.

Their fav choice and what i decided to do is use a external wet sump pump. Its a fairly simple setup and looking at your setup a Petterson or Moroso single stage pump should work great.

Their second choice is a billet pump setup whether it be the moroso one or a titan or the like setup. They just really were pushing me away from using a cast setup. I figure with the rpms, and all 500-1k for oiling needs really isn't that much in the big picture you prob have way more than that in stainless for the turbos...

So me personally looking at what you are prob going to be pushing HP wise and all I would look at one of these two choices if you have some extra cash.

But as for the oil pickup tube wasn't it tack welded in place at least????

Hopefully all is well with your bottom end.

Steven

No my pump would never hit 60psi at 7K. The factory gauge is probably off 5-10psi accoring to a machanical. Id say about maybe 45-50psi at 7K.
rskrause why did you decide to increase the bearing clearance? I usually went with a tighter clearance just curious?? as for my factory pump the sump was tacked on but possibliy it broke loose? I hope to have the motor out saturday.

If nothing is wrong with the pump im thinking that the oil just got too hot and broke down after 100 miles. when I changed the SAE40 that I had in there it was like water after 150 miles. Thus, not enough lube=bearing faliure. At this point I didnt have the oil cooler hooked up which was stupid.

I will have to look into that wet sump.

The bearings looked pretty rough when we tore it down. I had done it with standard clearances last time. I think it was the "shock" of the nitrous hitting that caused the bearings to look so bad and am hoping that a thicker oil film will help. I haven't decided what oil to run yet.

Took the motor apart today it looks like a main bearing problem. The top coat gray color, was completly gone on all the main bearings. The rod however seem ok.

Im still confused about the squeaking noise that was coming from the bottom of the motor? I had no loose parts. I was on and off and was constant while reving the car? Any ideas what would cause that, not sure if bearings would or not?
