LT1 DIY Turbo Progress pics!

Well my build is starting to take shape. I have both headers and most of the down pip and cross over tacked together. the fitment is stellar! I can reach all my plugs and header bolts from the top! Once i get it 100% mocked up, my buddy will be cleaning all the tack welds, tigging it all and pressure testing it. then ill send it all out for coatings.

For this setup Ill be running a MP T70 but I plan on upgrading that to a T76 after I work out Newbie turbo bugs. Since this is my first venture into the turbo world I figured a T70 would be a great place to start. The engine will be coming out as soon as I finish tacking everything together. ill be replacing the stock bottom end with an Eagle crank, H-beams, and either Ross, Diamond or JE pistons.(Im still up in the air about what size dish im going to want) The LE3 heads will remain along with the pro mags, morels, and LT4 timing set. Im probably going to swap cams out to a more blower friendly cam. maybe something off the self, still havent cleared that hurdle.

Anyway heres the pics! what do you think so far? Is there anything you would have done differently?

Looks awesome.

I am wishing I would have done some tubes instead of my straight logs. I have good fitmant but I bet the flow is horrible.

I really tried to get everything flowing smoothly together. It just sucks that it will be a couple months before I actually get it running. once the enigne is out Im filling and smoothing the engine bay and getting a fresh coat of paint in there. that alone will take a couple weeks. Ill be doing that while the block is out at the machine shop..... lots and lots of work still ahead of me....

Question. Where is the best place to put the wideband? before WG? after WG? in the down pipe?

I would put it @ 8 inches away from the turbo in the downpipe. Mine is actually before the turbo and I have heard thats not ideal but I don't know why.

Downpipe is where most say. Wastegate shouldn't effect it as long as there are no leaks. It reads a ratio - so the amount of air flowing past it shouldn't matter.

I have a leak on my wastegate on the downpipe side, my preturbo side seals fine - so thats why my wideband read correctish - the dyno was off.

Most people put the wideband in the downpipe, due to excessive heat and pressure before the turbo.

My manifolds looked like an orange neon sign on the dyno. Could almost see through them.

I did that It makes it A LOT nicier, I also deleted everything I didn't need and did a full wire tuck.

Ive already deleted all the wires I dont need, Im now going to try ton consolidate some of the different sets of looms. I want to steamline it everywere possible. Im getting rid of the washer resivour, and working on a coolant over flow thats a little smaller and better looking. did you weld plates on the back side of the holes or use body panel epoxy?

Weren't you having AFR issues on the dyno? Excessive backpressure can cause exaggerated AFRs when not near stoich. At least that's what all of the manufacturers say.

Where is the steering linkage? The DP looks like it would run right into it.

Any other angles of the steering linkage/DP clearance.

Overall it looks good.

The steering linkage can be seen in the second pic under the red wire loom. At its closest spot its about 2-2.5" away from the down pipe.

Thanks for all the help Jon! after getting into this more I realized it would have taken quit a bit of work, reworking the 4th gen stuff to fit nicely in the thirdgen. right now I can reach all the plugs from the top no problem.

That would suck! To make sure I didnt forget anything in the mock up I just drove it in and pulled the headers and went to work leaving EVERYTHING still connected. Im hoping once its coated itll look sharp.

We welded plates to the rear side
