Gear choice with turbo?
Can someone help me understand why tall gears for turbo motors. If turbo motors generally do less rpms per speed, wouldn't you want a higher gear ratio to put you in your power band quicker? Where am I mistaken?
One reason is that turbo motors usually peak low in the rpm range as compared to NA motors, and they typically pull alot higher mph. So, if you gear it for redline at the end of the track, you end up with a tall gear.
My car: 700 rwhp @ 5700 rpm. 146 mph in the quarter at 6200 rpm with a 26" tire and 3.00 gears. It's geared nearly perfect.

Ex. - Mashing it @ 1200 rpms in 1st gear, full spool by 3400rpm
then mash it at 1200rpms in 3rd gear - full boost by 2400rpm
