A few sts questions

Hey all, Ive been researching power adders lately, the sts has always been in the back of my mind but I havent strongly considered it until now. I was debating between the sts, a blower or a 100 nx wet shot. I was leaning towards the spray, but after finding out all the safety features and upgrades needed to make it safe, I thought why not spend some more and get a system thats always there when you need it, doesnt need to be electrically activated, and doesnt need to be refilled.

I liked the idea of a turbo as opposed to a blower because of the hard hit, no parasitic loss, and not there when you cruise, but there when you get on it. (also, who can resist that spool ) If any of you guys disagree with anything Im thinking, let me know, im definately not as experienced as you may be. But Ill quit my rambling and get to the questions, thanks in advance for any advice

1. On an LT1 with stock internals, what will need to be done to prevent killing my engine? I dont think Ill need to go forged, because i just plan to run 5 psi for daily driving. A tune would be for sure, but would I need better injectors or a better fuel pump?

2. What mileage is too high to run FI safely?

3. I cant help but think the thing might get stolen, would it be wise to fab up some sort of removable cloaking plate? It would also prevent splashing. By the way, can water coming in contact with the hot turbo create cracking or is it not a problem?

4. As far as emissions goes, will this **** off the inspectors? Also, will it throw any codes that will cause me to fail?

5. This last one is kind of out there.. but considering the water problems with the filter (even with the sock), would it be practical to route the intake into the back of the interior to prevent this hazard, or am I on crack for even thinking of this?

Again, thanks for advice. If you cant answer the questions, throw in your .02 for a boost newbie. Ive done research, but you can never know too much

I also heard on ls2 that crap from your cat can fall off and damage the turbo? is this a big concern or not? If it would kill the turbo, I wonder if I would have to put a cat after the turbo before the tailpipe to keep it emissions legal. Im sure this isnt a concern, and I really dont want to screw around with mounting cats after the turbo. Any insights would be great

I would gt 42lb/hr injectors and a racetronix intank setup. that should be good to 500rwhp.

2. What mileage is too high to run FI safely?

On an LT1 even 0 miles will be risky If you have a very conservative tune it will last awhile. I would think if your undr 100k mils than its fine. Either way, you'll need a forged setup at some point might be 2k miles or 20k miles).

3. I cant help but think the thing might get stolen, would it be wise to fab up some sort of removable cloaking plate? It would also prevent splashing. By the way, can water coming in contact with the hot turbo create cracking or is it not a problem?

Whatever you want to do. If someone wants something bad enough, they'll find it and take it.

4. As far as emissions goes, will this **** off the inspectors? Also, will it throw any codes that will cause me to fail?

with a good tune you wont throw codes and just stay with a small cam (like your stocker) and you'll be fine.

It wil be noisey

That engine has alot bigger lungs than you do.... That would be alot of air being sucked out of the interior, in a short amount of time. You'd cave in the windows

Yea, I wasnt really considering the interior air filter thing too much, I dont want to hack up my floor panels for it. Im just a little skeptical about having the filter down under the car there.

Re: A few sts questions

if you have any sort of cai, it is under the car already... my filter sits about 1/2 an inch above the plastic panel below it.

Re: A few sts questions

It just seems more vulnurable sticking out near the rear, I guess im just not used to it. Basically, with the turbo I'm looking for the cheapest, simplest way to increase the performance without sacrificing the streetability. This rules out a h/c package, and the STS is so much simpler to install as opposed to a front mounted turbo setup. It will also preserve room under the hood so I'll still be able to change the plugs and such. I was looking at ati and vortech, but the STS sounds like the cheapest, easiest way. Any suggestions, as always, are appreciated

Just keep in mind, turbo and cheap usually don't go hand in hand. You start with just the base 5 psi kit, and then all of a sudden your ordering a built motor and bigger turbo, etc...

Can you tell what happened to me??

^ haha, i guess its easy for the boost addiction to get out of hand
But yea, thats a nice part about turbocharging, when funds build up, you can crank the boost, empty the bank and fly
I just want to find the best method for me, all motor is sweet and all, but my one car has to daily drive.

The companies claim that you can simply bolt up their systems and run 5# of boost on a stock lt1 for miles and miles without complications.. Id love to believe this but its hard. What do you guys think? Oh by the way, merry christmas

Re: A few sts questions

When my car was at 5 psi, it was a daily driven car. I had minimal issues at that point. I think the STS kit is great for what you are trying to accomplish. Just make sure you get it tuned right, and make sure you have enough fuel. I wouldn't automatically assume that you wouldn't have to add anything to the kit in order to accomplish that.

Plan on injectors, maybe a fuel pump, and a really good tune...at the least. Good luck, and Merry Christmas.
