The only advantage to the LTx is the reverse cooling... I wish this was offered in other sbc gen I blocks.. it would be cool to have such a configuration of cooling...

I would like a taller deck block so i can push more cubes with decent angularity...

But at that power level.. i think the ltx block is at its limits.

flyin_hawaiin -

Good to know. Thanks.

The point is to try an idea I have, not simply chase a HP goal. If all I wanted was a big HP number, I'd just buy a ZZ572.

Tony -

I'm not looking to build a budget motor. I want to keep it simple, not cheap.

I'm afraid you may be right. The only saving grace is that the particular idea I want to explore means the engine will spend most of it's time making much less power.

All you have to do is pickup a copy of national dragster to see that there are 3 or 4 national shops that sell 800-900 hp sbc for less than $15 Gs. Similarly, my dad says that DC racing engines in Colorado has built at least 2 sbc currently racing here that make over 900 hp. It is much easier to fit a sbc in a 3rd or 4th gen car than a bbc.

We would really like to see you build such a X trim car, but the bottom end will take a beating and should be built by Grump Jenkins himself, so to speak!

We just have a different perspective on what budget means. $15K is not a budget engine, IMO. Certainly in the world of professional drag racing, it would be. The one thing that's painfully obvious in drag racing is that you can play at whatever level you can afford and budgets can range from 400/mo bracket racers to million/year or more top fuelers.

To me, a $15K sbc better be pretty frickin' exotic...

As far as putting big blocks in 3rd and 4th gens, there are some interesting threads on this board. To me, if you're getting away from production engines, it's a logical progression. That's what the quick 16 stuff is all about...

I know that you know my dad, who has told me many times that 3rd and 4th gen chassis and suspensions are not designed for these power levels. The next time you see stealth look at the wrinkles in the rear panels. These are street cars.

The main point I was trying to make was that a 900 hp sbc will cost you a lot less than a 900 hp ls1. All of which is off the topic of this thread.

Will you see us bandimere this weekend?

No production car's chassis and suspension are designed for these hp levels...

I think you could build a pretty nice LS1 for $15K. Whether you can keep the heads on it at 1000 hp is more the issue to me, considering the cylinder pressures you're going to be generating with the X-trim. (that should get us back on the thread...)

I won't be at Bandi this weekend, I'm taking my wife on a 20th anniversary trip to Durango (her idea...) to raid all the indian jewelery sellers. (Who said drag racing was expensive... )

honestly

what is the big deal with DYNO NUMBERS??? Anyone can build a dyno queen... do you drive the car on a dyno?? Its performance on the track and on the street (if thats what you built it for) that matters... who cares if it makes 1000hp or 2000hp or 500hp... as long as it runs the number you were shooting for..

My mustang makes a little ovre 800rwhp through a unlocked 6200 stall converter yet runs 8.70s @ 156... other cars make supposedly 850+ yet run 9.90s... which would you rather have?

I agree. Tell that to Prostock John. He is all about dyno numbers.

Yeah it really comes down to power to weight ratio and I am sure your Mustang is pretty light weight.

Actually that is not bad at all. Is that with you in the car? I know most of the Stang guys are closer to 2900 lbs.

Anyway as always you have yourself a nice setup.

Just a general FYI, this isn't for an F-Body. It's for a B-Body. A stripped down police car, to be specific.

As to Grumpy needing to build it, let me tell you exactly what Grumpy told me on this very subject, over 20 years ago. (Building a strong bottom)

Balance and Blueprint, Kid. Balance and Blueprint.

Now go away, I'm working.
What...? You think he got that nickname for nothing?
