Can't use fresh ceramic coating during new engine "break in"?

I wanted to get my headers ceramic coated for the new engine. A local shop that does poder coating also does ceramic coating. They're very specific about not using freshly coated headers on a new motor. Apparently, the coating can't take any more than 700* for the first 30 minutes? They claim header temp will aclipse this during high idle break in periods??? Do all coated headers give this same warning? Any more info on this would be greatly appreciated. Are they just being "overly cautious"?

Thermal tech coatings is local to me....I took mine there and got there new polished/chrome looking coating, I was told to go with it....he said this stuff is good to 1400* I guess it depends on the coating type

The last 2 times I had mine coated by jet hot...the stuff didn't last 2 months

I also have Jet-Hot and they didn't last through one season. They were installed at the on a stock motor with 50K.

mdacton probably had a better material than the generic ceramics. typical ranges for low end material are 500-700 degrees f. high end commercial run 1000-1500, and industrial (dupont makes some, quite expensive tho) for nasa, steel mill blast furnaces, etc can handle 2500-3000 degrees.

the biggest problem is you cant have all the necessary properties to hold up for very long if you're greedy, meaning they can do 1000 degree coatings and it might be metallic to hold color and heat resistance, but it will corrode. so you go to a epoxy-organic nitrate mix to deter corrosion, but now they look like hell from the heat.

a company like jet hot isnt going to spend $900 for premium coating when im sure their dipping vats need at least a 100 gallons and lose material to dripping and splashing. cant justify or stay in business for a set of $1000 headers when its all said and done. cheaper to replace your rusted ones down the road

Here's what a paper that came with my Jet Hot coated Pacesetters said:

Caution
Protect your engine

During tuning of certain engines, especially new ones, lean or rich/fuel air mixtures can cause hot spots well in excess of 1300 degrees, with potentially adverse effects to the header and possibly the engine. We STRONGLY recommend the use of a large floor fan to cool the engine and headers during this period. Or, if avaliable, use an old set first for tuning. FAILURE TO TAKE THESE PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN PERMANANT DAMAGE TO THE COATING.

Ignition timing is CRITICAL to exhaust temperatures, which are not reflected by the water temperature guage.

What coating did you use? Jet Hot has many, I popped for the Jet Hot 2000, good to 2400 degrees, hope it lives.

the 2000....I was told by thermal tech that they use a water based ceramic coating and he gets them in everyday

What gets me is there lifetime warrenty....its a load of crap, they won't stand behind it, they did them the first time after I complained for 2 months...then I paid shipping down there...they would not ship em back unless I paid shipping. I will never deal with them again and I will tell my story to everyone I meet

I went with these guys....they really know what they are talking about and are local to me http://thermaltechcoatings.com/

The Pacesetter coatings aren't much better as mine lasted less then a years time on a car that is rarely driven and sees no rain or road salt. Maybe I'll have to check out these guys as I was hoping to get my headers recoated.

How much did that service run if you don't mind me asking? It looks like they would roughly charge around 250.00 to coat a set of long tubes? Also noticed they do powercoating services.

Do they not think EGTs get above 700* any other time? That reasoning is ****ing retarded IMO.

I've created an eight channel EGT module and monitored exhaust gases for most of the summer of 2005. At idle, temps hovered in the low 700's. Under cruise conditions, it was in the 1100's, and under hard acceleration it would peak at 1300 (+-50 degrees) on average, across the eight cylinders. Turbo apps can sometimes spike at 1700, but usually are in the 1300 range.
