Yoke/Driveshaft question

I just finished replacing the yoke/pinion seal on my car and was wondering how tight the bolt should be that holds the yoke on. I noticed that it was only on there a few threads before I took it off, and put it back on at about the same place, but the bolt it pretty loose, it could be tightened a lot more. Should I tighten it down? I am pretty sure if its too tight, it will crush one of the seals in the rear itself. Anyone done this before??

Re: Yoke/Driveshaft question

If you over tighten the nut it will crush the crush collar or sleeve on the pinion shaft that is very important to you gear set-up. I have a solid spacer so it's not as critical but the crush collar is torqued tight enough to get a specific amout of turning torque on the pinion shaft -- ~10 inch/lbs for used bearings and somewhat more for new pinion bearings. Try a search for 'pinion seal' or 'pinion yoke', thats how I found the specs. Double check the 10 in/lbs, I'm old and my memory ain't so good.
