What side of the clutch disc goes towards the transmission?
What side of the clutch disc goes towards the transmission?
It's been months since I took out my 6 speed and I'm about to put a new clutch in and reinstall it (went to a TH350 for awhile). I just got the new disc but it doesn't say "front" or "Transmission side", etc. One side of the disc is flat, the other side, the splined hub stands up about 1.5" Which side faces the transmission?
Thanks,
Dave

Thanks,
Dave

I think this is incorrect. After buttoning everthing up, the engine strains to start(won't) with the clutch pedal untouched. Press the clutch to the floor, it starts up right away. After it's running, if you let the clutch out, even a little, the motor labors down. If you let it out more, it binds enough to kill the motor. I think that protruded hub is binding on that collar over the input shaft. Pressing the clutch pedal lets it free and it can at least spin.
I'll peel it apart this coming weekend if work permits. This setup has been in my car before (from 2003 till last Sept 2009). I looked at a sprung hub disc that someone had posted in the "Stickies" and it plainly is stamped "Flywheel Side" on the side that has the protruding hub. It's completely flat on one side of this disc and protrues on the other side. I'm pretty sure they don't mount the springs on that flat side. We shall see...
Thanks for everyones input.

As if it weren't bad enough, today I went out and took everything off/down to pull the tranny and flip the disc. Not happening. The transmission is STUCK. It's as if the pressure plate and/or disc is binding on something. I've twisted, pulled, yanked, put a 'come-along' puller on it, used pry bars, etc. I've barely managed to open a gap between the bell housing and the tranny. I couldn't even get anything at all between the bell housing and the block. It's stuck in a major way. The only thing I can think to do is to drill/cut a window around the perimeter of the bellhousing so can can take out the pressure plate bolts, one at a time, and then pull the freakin thing out and assess what the hell happened. Sigh...

BTW - Got to meet Jason Short tonight and picked up a replacement bellhousing for a good price. He's a super nice guy. Thanks Jason!
