What happens to the gears when all the fluid leaks out?

My rear end leaked out all the oil apparantly and got real hot. I was driving down the road and I heard it starting whining real loud, then it slowed the car down to almost a stop, so I pulled over and got it towed. I took the cover off, got a new gasket, and filled it back up. I tried to drive it around, but I get alot of grinding and rattling noise coming fromt the rear end. Would this be a typical result of overheating the rear end due to lack of oil?

If I did indeed "burn up" the rear end, I am going to need some more 4.10's for a stock 10-bolt. If you have some you want to get rid of or for sale, let me know.

I'd also like a girdle, some axles, and a better posi.

You more than likely burned up the bearings (differential and pinion), and maybe the axle bearings too. I wouldn't be surprised if your posi doesn't work the greatest either, but it may be ok.
