what gears

yeah that same old question again. I have 3.23s stock in my 93 z. I just bought some 4.10s, everyone says its to much gear, i want to change my shift point to 6 grand and put some 29 inch tall or more street radials on there. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks :] its an A4 :[

If it's going in a factory rear it won't last long because of the pinion size. 4.10 is not to much gear but a 3.73 will last a LOT longer. You'll have to come down(smaller) on your tire diameter.

Re: what gears

410s in the auto is quite a bit of gear...too much?? no probably not as long as you don't like good gas milage.

you'll have hell of a time getting traction i think.

however...a 29" tire won't fit under the wheelwells without some serious trimming.
realize the stock tire diameter is 25.7"...

why on earth do you want 29" tires anyway? looking for the lame redneck jacked up rear look??

Re: what gears

4.10 is a lot of gear for an auto. i have it in my 6 speed, and they are perfect because of 5th and 6th (two overdrive gears) but you might have a drone on the highway, if you dont mind then whatever. get soem nittos instead of the 29" diameter... trust me on that...

Re: what gears

i wanted a gear that wouldent keep me at 4 grand forever, i plan to change the shift point to 6, then get a way better flowing setup, like the lt4 package. Will it throw me out of my 3 gears and into overdrive? If that happens then i need different gears. the last thing i want to do is race in overdrive. also, when i type in 1:1 gear in the calculator, is it 1.1 x whatever or 1.0?

Re: what gears

I've responded to your question on the 29-30" tires on the "wheel and tire" forum. The rest of your question re the "gears" belongs in "Drivetrain", not on "LT1 Engine Tech". I'll move it to Drivetrain for you.

You should be entering the final drve as 4.10, and the trans gear as 1.0

What gear calculator are you using.... my own calculator shows the following top speeds in 3rd gear, at 6,000rpm:

26" tire - 113mph
28" tire - 122mph
30" tire - 130mph

How are you planning to run 130mph trap speeds?

The lightest wheels for slicks (not for road use) are the Bogart P1 Billet's. Check with SJM Manufacturing, he has a set specifically made for the 4th Gens, with the correct offset. About $325 each though. The alternative would be a Weld Pro-Star of Draglite, 15x10, 7.5" backspace, about $190 each. You will need longer wheel studs for those.

Re: what gears

i wasnt planning to trap at 130, i figure with my full setup i will probably trap about 120 sometime within the next year. Probably something like the lt4 setup. Ill check out that place for the wheels, thank you very much :]
