Weird noise after M6 swap
Weird noise after M6 swap
I got my car started after the M6 swap with open headers and everything seemed to be fine. I put it in gear while it was on the jacks and verified that the wheels are turning.
Now that I hooked up the exhaust, I'm getting a high pitch, squeel type of noise. Like something is lightly hitting something else while turning. The speed of the noise changes with RPM.
The engine worked perfectly with the automatic. The tranny is rebuilt and I have new hydraulics. The flywheel is a used SLP aluminum flywheel and clutch is a used spec stage 3.
Any ideas? I tried to pinpoint the sound but it seems like it's coming from everywhere.
The sound stays the same with the clutch pressed or depressed. Gear or neutral.

Re: Weird noise after M6 swap
Oops, just read it happens even with the clutch engaged. Might be the throwout bearing then. Did you turn it by hand before installing it? I had a throwout bearing go out in my one T/A and it made horrible noises.
Re: Weird noise after M6 swap
I could turn it by hand. I didn't try to spin it quick, but I know it was turning because I had to turn it a couple of times to get the fork on.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Weird noise after M6 swap
One other weird thing I noticed. I put it in gear because I was trying to tighten a bolt on the balancer and when I was tightening the bolt, I could hear the back wheel try to move. (the car was slightly higher than the ramp)
I know a little bit of play is normal, but that sounded a bit more than a little. Do you think there might be something wrong with the tranny?
The wheels were turning though when I started it the first time and put it in gear.

Re: Weird noise after M6 swap
I will say it has to be in the clutch or pressure plate/throwout bearing. You said it makes the noise whether the clutch is push or released. Push the clutch in and start the car and make sure the trans is in gear. While holding the clutch in, do you hear the noise? If so, then its probably the throwout bearing or pressure plate as if the clutch is in and the trans is in gear. Nothing is moving on the trans at that state. So I would rule out the trans.
Re: Weird noise after M6 swap
Also the noise sounds like one of the fingers on the pressure plate is hitting something. I would pull the trans and look for fresh marks on the pressure plate.
Re: Weird noise after M6 swap
Well, I went ahead and disconnected the slave off the tranny. My hydraulics is new, so it came with the zip tie over the rod. The zip tie isn't broken on mine. Check it out.
I have no idea why either. The fork seems to be on the bearing. It went in and clicked.
From what I could see through that hole, there is no damage to the pressure plate. I also pulled the inspection cover and nothing there either.
What is also puzzling is how when I first started it, my tires started spinning (while on jacks) as I depressed the clutch in first. How could this be?
My clutch pedal is lower than the brake pedal right now, but that seems to happen on most swaps. I can go ahead and take it to a machine shop tomorrow and have them make it adjustable for me, but I don't know if that's really my problem. Could the fork still not be in somehow and it's just dangling in there? It's definetely not moving on the sides. I can only pull it out a little bit, but that's about it as far as moving, so it seems to be right.

Re: Weird noise after M6 swap
if you didnt take it off, That is why you have the low pedal because the slave is not releasing all the way. Could be the noise problem as the fork doesnt have enough tension against it.
Re: Weird noise after M6 swap
I just sent ya a pic. of what my factory Slave looks like. It does not have that zip tie on it. The last car I installed a slave on, I removed the band just prior to installation. I think this is the problem you might be having. Cut that thing off and reinstall it.
Re: Weird noise after M6 swap
I didn't take the zip tie off because (having never installed a brand new master/slave before) everyone here said you are supposed to install it with it on and it will break when you press the pedal the first time. OK, I'll go ahead and take it off then.
Re: Weird noise after M6 swap
The correct dealer way on installing the slave is to cut the zip after you put it on. cut the end that is exposed after the install. I will almost say 100 % this is the problem you are having.
