Is it worth buying used gears (1000 mi) if the guy says that they're in good condition and installed by a reputable shop? Seems sincere, but he's got a low post count. What do you think?

 

Never tried it but I was always told it will work but they will make unwanted noise. With the minimal amount gears cost I wouldn't think about buying used, its not worth the risk.

 

That's like buying a used cam. Gears are what, $225? $250? Just get new ones...

 

well, to save $100, it's pretty tempting. any way to check visually if they're good or not?

 

My last 2 gearsets were GM 3.42 takeouts. They make no noise at all. Just have to have a good installer. Gotta love those T56 guys throwaways.

There's nothing inherently wrong with used gears. It's like any used parts. ASSUMING they were correctly installed and used for just 1,000 miles, they would be no different from if you had bought them new and put 1,000 miles on them. The problem is in knowing if the parts are as represented. I used to use a lot of used parts, back when I had a lot less $$$. And I sell a lot of used parts now. Guys who get my stuff are getting a real bargain, because the parts are as represented and I price them reasonably. I also never had a probelm as a buyer, but that was all in the pre-internet era when they were bought/traded from local people who I know and knew where to find.

Bottom line - there is some element of risk. If I were paying for the install, I wouldn't do it because that is adding the cost of the isntall to the risk. If it were a DIY job, I'd consider it.

Nothing was wrong with the gears being used. After 3 1/2 years of abuse and 60fts in the 1.5's the first set broke. I now have another 3.42 takeout in it's place. New or not 60fts like that will break a 7.5" ring gear.

 

I hear ya, just giving ya $hit ...In a situation like that I would be doing the same but mine is a daily driver that doesn't pull 1.5 60ft's.
