Transmission slipping, trying fluid and filter change
Transmission slipping, trying fluid and filter change
I've had two auto transmission Camaros, my 94 V6 and my current car. Both transmissions haven't done me well. The first Camaro just had problems shifting from reverse and drive taking a little bit of time, but would shift very firmly like it had a shift kit in it. When in park, it would crunch the gravel when shifting to drive or reverse. Well I totaled that car so that transmission is gone with the car.
Now to my current car, with 138K miles, it shifts very well from drive, revese and park. Not so well while driving. I can only feel it shift from first to second, no other gears. It takes a long long time to shift, high reving for over 10 seconds if I just sit on the gas, but if I let it go, it shifts shortly after that. It worked a little better than it does now when I bought the car, but the previous driver didn't take it out too much. The transmission does much better when it is cold outside. This having only two gears is killing my gas mileage.
So I'm gong to change the filter and fluid tomorrow. I went to Advance today to see if they had the parts or had to order them and they ask me if I have a shallow or regular pan. Regular pan I guessing, but I decided to check here to make sure. Would it be worth flushing the fluid myself? Is that hard? I've read how to to it on here after searching but don't want to mess up my transmission more than it is now.
*Side story that explains my hope for fluid and filter change. My buddy had a beater car that we beat the hell out of one day till it just stopped. All the gears went out one at at time, 3, 2, 1, gone. The car sit for a few months and his dad changed the fluid and filter and boom it works fine.

Re: Transmission slipping, trying fluid and filter change
That might work for the beater, but it probably won't work for the Camaro since the autos in these cars are already stressed out as it is. You might get lucky by changing the fluid, but I wouldn't count on it lasting very long if it works at all. When my 95 lost 3rd and 4th I just junked it and got a used T56. It was about the same price as a rebuild would have been, anyway (but doing a trans swap in the driveway sucked).
