transmission problems.please help

i have a 94 chevy caprice with a lt1 and a believe a 4l60e tranny.i just bought the car and the tranny shift fine but i just wanted to flush all fluids and change filters cause the car was sitting for 3 years.anyways i changed the filter on the the tranny and i notice the stem on the filter wouldnt go all the way in the slot.but it did go enough to where it would stay.but it wasnt in smooth like it should but it held.so now that everything is done the tranny shift really wierd and i when i hit 35 or 40 it just revs up and wont kick into gear.it does sometime but not always.it revs up 80% of the time.please help.has anybody of heard of this before?

When you put the new filter back in did you remove the old seal from the hole that the filter neck slips in to? If you did not and put the new seal on the neck of the new filter that could be why the filter doesn't go up all the way. There is not much clearance between the bottom of the pan and the filter and if the filter doesn't go all the way in it'll starve it of flow.

If you tried to re-use the old seal and didn't use the new one at all. That could cause problems if the seal has become brittle. The fact that the filter didn't go all the way in could also be causing it to suck air.

Lastly. Double check the fluid level. Also take note if it's foamy. This is a definite sign that you don't have a good seal at the filter.

Let us know what you find.

The seal is usually recessed a bit up in the hole. A seal puller will work best since you don't want to chew up the aluminum by trying to pry it out. Shouldn't be expensive if you need to buy one. Check your local autoparts stores.

Even without replacing the seal the new filter should have slipped all the way in. Did you compare old filter to new just to make sure you have the right part? I really figured you put the new seal on the filter neck and stuck it in there without realizing the old seal was still in the hole. They almost never come out with the filter and you can't see it if you're not looking. So it's easy to overlook.

i looked up in the hole and didnt see no seal.so i put the new filter i bought on there with the seal and after playing with it it finally went in all the way but it still does the same thing.are those seals hard to see when there in there?are they usually deep in there or are they just right there in bottom?

I'm not sure on the 4L60E, but I remember it being up in the hole about 3/8" or so on a 700R4 which is just a non-electronic version. So you have to be looking for it. If you're not sure. Stick a finger in there and feel for it. If you didn't remove it the first time around it is in there.
