tranny swap

my buddy has a 97 z28 and is putting a turbo 400 into it and since my tranny has taken a dump i was wondering if his 6-speed will will fit in our ls1?

Nope. The bell housings are different. You can remove the housings, and maybe even swap em, but I dont know for sure if that will work. The LT1's have Borg Warner T-56's and LS1's have Tremecs. Correct me if I am wrong on the tranny brands though.

bellhousing is the same (well the lt1 has 1 extra bolthole you don't use when bolting up to an ls1), but the flywheel and clutch are different. I'm pretty sure they are both also t-56.

They are both T-56 trannies, but I was under the impression the LT1 and LS1 T-56's were made by different companies.
