Tranny problem or computer related??

Last year I woulkd run my car at the track on the test and tune nights. On the 2-3 shift it would bounce off the rev limiter a few times before auctually shifting. I did some research and found that it sounds like i needed a rebuild. Not having the money for it i bought a used one that was rebuild in october (less than 10k miles). So i put it in tonight and it does the same thing as my old one. It feels EXACTLY the same. It shifts a little bit harder but on the 2-3 shift it still bounces off the rev limiter than slams into gear. Im kinda upset about the whole situation, but im trying to figure it out. Its possible that the used tranny i got is doing the same thing, but it feels exactly the same as the old one. Is there any possibillity it could be computer related? Thanks for any help/info! -Jeff

Re: Tranny problem or computer related??

Usually people have problems with shifting with aftermarket throttle bodies. It changes the readings the sensors input to the pcm and make it time the shifts differently, so it will shift too early or too late. I would suggest cleaning your throttle body, checking for vacuum leaks and if you have a multimeter doing some diagnostic checks on the sensors in that vicinity, namely tps, map, etc.

Usually if the trans is messed up it will shift awkwardly, or not at all.

Most all 60E's will do this unless the correct internal modificxations are made. If you do a search, you'll find countless posts regarding this issue. Unfortunately, there are also many "reputable" transmission builders in the country who still don't know how to fix this problem.

Re: Tranny problem or computer related??

i just took my camaro in to have the tranny swapped for a rebuild. mine has been doing the slam off the rev limiter thing for the last year or so. last week reverse went out and my mechanic said the tranny was bad. he took the tranny out today and said it is already on its at least 2nd tranny coz the one in it now has a local junk yard name on it. my z only has 89k miles on it:/ ill post again when i get back friday and tell ya if shifts properly or not.

Well i cleaned up the TB and all the electrical connectors and hooked my scanner up to it. All the sensors seem to be fine. I dont know what to do now.. I guess start saving for a CPT rebuild. Does anyone else have any other suggestions i can try?

Re: Tranny problem or computer related??

As you probably are guessing you probably will need a tranny rebuild. I lost 4th gear on the freeway while on cruise control when I then accelerated to pass another car.

That night I then lost 3rd gear too. I was left with 1,2 and reverse and I bought a used tranny and so far, so good.

If it the tranny grabs the gears, then wait till the tranny goes out, if you drive to work locally, then rebuild the tranny. Just remember to get off the gas when it reving rpms and not grabing gear.

Sorry for saying this but, you did already check the tranny fluid? My brothers mazda jumped rpm and won't grab gear. I look at the tranny fluid and it needed 1 quart of tranny fluid and has since, so far, been behaving good. Good luck.

When I got my car the shift point was set to close to the fuel cut off so I lowered the 2-3 shift point 3 mph and it works fine.

Re: Tranny problem or computer related??

I had my friend raise my RPM limiter a little bit and it shifts great now, so im glad about that. Why would it suddently change like that though? Is this something i should be worried about?

Re: Tranny problem or computer related??

This is odd, I'm having the exact same problem with my tranny right now and there is less than 50 miles on it, my last one was doing the exact same thing also. The new tranny was a complete rebuild, including the drum.

Mine sometimes shifts from 2-3 and sometimes it doesn't. When I leave it in drive it hits 3rd gear really soft when driven normally, and it hits the rev limiter at WOT, if you give it gas while in drive and in 3rd it just slips. But if you manually select 3rd gear it holds just fine and doesn't slip. I changed the fluid and it looks like there is some clutch material in it at the bottom of the pan "its black at the very bottom".
