Tranny messed up. Check ***** in wrong places?

Well, my transmission was not shifting right ( wayyyy too high). We took it to a shop, and they said it was probably a dirty valve body. We tore it all apart and cleaned it, problem wasn't solved. We checked the governor (it was completely jammed open). I replaced that today, and now the car shifts perfectly and really hard at about 2K rpm when I'm light on the throttle (right where I want it). The only problem is, if I move the shifter to 3rd, and it tries to shift, it will just slip and eventually pop back into first gear. Now, I know I had 3rd and 4th before I took out the valve body (just took bringing it to 4500rpm to get there) So I think I may have messed something up. Would having a check ball in the wrong place cause this? It just feels like a really bad pressure loss. When the cars on jackstands it'll go into 3rd, theres just not enough pressure on the clutches to actually move the car. Help please, i've been without a car for over a week now.

Did you just drop the valvebody, or the valvebody and plate? The valvebody on a '93 700 takes (3) checkballs. The "bathtub" in the valvebody doesn't take a checkball. '93's are unique because it's the only one that takes a ball in the very front of the valvebody, which is for reverse apply.
Are you sure you've got the TV linkage (mousetrap) back on right?

It really doesn't sound like a checkball mislocation problem. I think you're having problems with the valvebody and governor because you have other internal problems. Valves don't usually just stick for no reason.

Well it has close to 200K miles on it, i'm sure they could get dirty eventually. But what else could the problem be? How much do you think it'll be to get fixed?

Was there alot of black sediment in the bottom of the pan when you dropped it? Was the fluid dark, or smell burnt?
My guess is, the 3-4 clutches have taken a dump.

3rd gear was working before we pulled the valve body tho, it just had to go to like 4500 rpm to do it (all the shifts were like that)

And the fluid was dirty, but not really bad.

Hey, good call on that. Tranny place said the 3-4 clutch pack was bad. Guess i'm going to have to rebuild it. Are there any good books on it? any rebuild kits you'd reccomend? I definately don't have 1500 to have the shop do it, and it would be kind of a waste on a 4K car anyway

Anyone know of somewhere I can look that shows what all is involved in replacing the clutches? I'm pretty sure we can do it, but I want to know what i'm getting myself into

If you are looking to get a "complete" rebuild kit, then go to http://www.pro-built.net/index.cfm?f...ct&productid=5 for a complete Street/Strip kit. If you only want to replace what is necessary, the 3-4 clutch pack go to http://www.pro-built.net/index.cfm?f...categoryid=144 this will give you the Street/Strip Borg Warner 8 clutch with Kolene steels & pressure plates. If you have any questions call me at 800 7763288 anytime after 12 noon PST and I will be glad to help.
