Towing question

I am planning on towing my car with a tow dolly.

I have heard rumors of the driveshaft having to be disconnected . . . does anyone know why?

The car is an M6, I am planning on towing about 150 miles one way for some track time, the use of the tow dolly would make my life easy.

If the car is an automatic, then yeah, you can't tow it far without having to pull the DS and plugging the tail of the tranny 'cause you'll overheat the tranny from turning it without the oil pump running (needs the motor running to work).

AFAIK, you could go as far as you want with a standard, 'cause the gears are just submersed in gear oil, and it's no different towing them than driving them? I might be wrong about that though??

Couldnt you just back the car onto the dolly and they the front wheels go free? as long as the steering lock is on it should be ok right?
