Third gear is gone

Third gear had been acting up recently in my 95z. When it was cold it seemed like it was the worst but then when it warmed up it seemed to get alot better except when i really got on it and it had to shift hard into 4th or going into third. Well today I think it completly went out on me. I had to drive in 2nd all the way home. It was hesitating shifting into third and then eventually it would shift to third and rev and I would get a little power but not enough to get much faster than 30mph. Reverse, 1st, and 2nd all shift fine no problems at all and it wont shift to 4th either. Im guessing you cant shift to 4th if you have no 3rd? Its the stock 4l60e and the car has 50,000 miles on it. The car hasnt been beaten that bad but I run it hard every once in awhile. I have a vig 3200 stall converter, a custom shift kit, and a trans cooler on it. Can just third gear be replaced? If so about how much am I looking at? ( I dont have too much money being in college ). Thanks alot.

Doesn't sound good dude, sounds like you're looking at a rebuild....
This may sound stupid, but did you check to see you had enough trans fluid?

Re: Third gear is gone

Also when the pan was dropped when we did the converter, cooler and shift kit the fluid looked real good, we changed in then and there was no shavings or anything in the fluid or pan so it looked like it was holding up pretty well and should of lasted longer than this. I thought that putting in shift kits usually prolonged life of the trans. The 1-2 shift is still really firm like its been since the kit was done. Im just really surprised a whole rebuild would be in line by how good of condition the trans seemed to be, thats why I was asking if a 3rd gear replace is possible, didnt know if it was a common practice, and how much it would cost. Thanks again.

Sounds like the 3-4 clutchpack went out. A lot of people on here loose some or all of gears 2-4 after installing shift kits in stock trannies.

Well, there's only one way to fine out exactly whats wrong, you'll have to take it in.
Seems like, at best, you'll have to drop the tranny and have it repaired.

Thanks for the info guys. Yea looks like ill be taking it in, but its def. nice to hear it might not need a rebuild, but I know not much with trannies is cheap.

Yeah I'm going to go with this one, too. If your 1st or 2nd went out you'd probably have 3-4. The R and 1,2 I believe are in the same band/clutch pak. I believe it's coincidentally named the "low and reverse clutch", you might not need a full rebuild but they will have to tear into it. It's about half way down inside the trans. I used to do it, but with these new ones, I'm lost.
