T-56 Disassembly question

I'm a newbie to the site but this looks like the right place!

My input shaft bearing race (attached the adapter plate) was damaged on my -016 T56 (LT1)by my throw out bearing and needs replacement. This is the race on which the throw out bearing travels. Is it possible to remove the transmission adapter plate with the tranny on a bench with the input shaft facing up? The manuals show disassembly of the T56 on a bench facing down with, of course, the very last component being the adapter plate. Can the adapter plate be carfully removed upright without disassembly of the entire unit as the manual suggests?

Thanks!

You probably meant to choose the Drivetrain forum. You will probably get more help there; it's where the "gearheads" hang out.

Isn't the T-56 a Russian tank or something. I saw one "disassembled" by a Hellfire missle.

Good luck!

AFter looking at the R&R manual for the T56, it seems that virtually any question related to it belongs on "Advanced Tech" by definition.... But I think the guys on "Drivetrain" may have more answers than you will find here. Moving to Drivetrain....

actually, it's almost the opposite, too many picts not enough words! they don't explain themselves too much, they just say do this do that, not how to do it.

To answer your question, no, it can't be done. It would be impossible to get everything lined back up and seated into the adapter plate. You'll have to disassemble the whole thing. I just did mine and it only took me less than an hour to get it all the way apart. But then again, this is my 4th time doing it!!

yea you can remove the front cover and replace the yoke that the throw out rides on I've had to do it on my car already once. As for the manual it shows the tranny with you putting the front cover in a vise or stand and building it from front to back. I have built everone on mine on a bench sitting flat but you do have to start in the front with the lower shaft then the main shaft followed by the front plate. If you are careful and remove the cover with the tranny standing on the tail end but not on the main shaft were the drive shaft goes that will force the main shaft foward, you can get the front cover off and fix that piece and put it back just take your time and don't use the bolts to pulls the cover back down make sure it sits on all the way before you go tighten things up.

Good luck
