Re: syncroes(?)

They're synchros. In a nutshell, they match the speeds of the transmission components during gear changes to avoid grinding.

If you're a fairly competent wrench turner you could probably rebuild your tranny yourself, all it involves is replacing a couple bearings and the synchro components. If you pay attention, possibly take pictures, everything should be fairly easy to put back together. You could save a lot of money that way, rebuild kits are fairly cheap. The gears and shafts themselves should still be good as long as maintenance was done and the tranny wasn't abused.

2k for a new tranny isn't bad either. Although if you went that route I would still try to rebuild the old tranny and sell it at a decent price.

I guess it would'nt hurt to take a look and see how involved it would to do yourself. The only problem I might have is telling what should be replaced.I have never even seen a open tranny before.Whats the worst thing that could happen, replace it? Any word on the viper tranny parts into T-56?

yeah... 1-2 gear is the worst to get to... it's way at the input shaft... you'll have to take the entire tranny down to get to those gears... I'd think about it if your not up for the task of breaking the tranny down... you'll need acess to a hydraulic press too... btw... to set the gearrs when your putting everything back together...

Re: syncroes(?)

You need to have the shop clarify what's worn-out. There's not necessarily a single part called a "synchro"; it's an assembly consisting of a slider ring, a blocking ring, and the gear itself. A set of high-perf blocking rings is only $150. If they've been worn for a while and the transmission continued to see use, it's possible that the teeth on the slider rings or gears have worn (the teeth should be sharply pointed if they're fresh and will be rounded-off when worn). That necessitates the replacement of expensive parts. You could be looking at a large range of costs, so make sure the shop is clear on what needs to be replaced before proceeding. It will probably require a complete tear-down to figure this out, so plan on paying for that if you want an accurate estimate.

If it's only the blocking rings, then you're only out the cost of those + the labor to remove, rebuild, and reinstall the trans. If you've got significant wear in other places, then you might get to the point where a fresh transmission will be a more economical choice.

Re: syncroes(?)

Thanks for the tips. It sounds like I should atleast drop the tranny, take it to shop to asses the damages and go from there. I would think that it shoul'nt cost alot just to have them go throuug it.I could save some $'s on dropping the tranny myself. I guess I shoulld also change out the clutch since I will have easy access to it.what do you recomend.Daily driver w/all bolt on's,chip crap like that.not looking for total agressive though.

Definitely a good idea. I think most people go with Spec Stage 2 or 3 for bolt on cars.

Also, if you're taking the trans to get inspected professionally, if they say shaft or gear and replace in the same sentence, it might be a good idea to pick up a new tranny. Those parts get expensive, although it's unlikely those parts are worn beyond serviceability.
