Somethings not right

I have a 93Z A4. When my car shifts from 1st to 2nd it feels like its sticking and it doesnt want to go into the next gear. And then when it does shift its really hard and even throws me around a little bit. It only does this between 1st and 2nd all other gears work great. But the weird thing is it only does this when im normally driving. If I WOT then there is no hesitation between gears. Any ideas what could be wrong?

More that likley you have a sticky throttle valve or shift valve throttle valve being more likley which in those units is generally due to contamination or particulate matter from something going bad in the transmission, Most likley you will need a rebuild or replacement , dropping the pan to see whats in the bottom would verify this.
thanks

...sounds kinda like a "flare". It could be a sign of the 2-4 band going out.

The tranny was just rebuilt maybe 8 months ago, is there any reason for this to be going bad already?

A "bad" rebuild will go out very quickly. There are many things that could have been missed or misassembled that will cause premature 2-4 band failure.

Does the transmission "shift late" on the 1st to 2nd part throttle shift? or on time? and if late, can you let off the throttle to make it shift earlier?
