Question shifting issue's

okay, i read a bunch of other posts trying to see if anyones problem is similar to mine. anyway, heres whats happening. i have a 94 z28 with the 4l60e. Whenever the car was in d ( not [d]) it would ping off the rev limiter a few times before it would shift into 3rd......worked fine in [d]. well, i ended up wasting that tranny so i just put in t new one....rebuilt 4l60e, aftermarket clutches, transgo shift kit...everything that could go bad was replaced. Anyway, now the car doesnt seem like it even try's to shift into 3rd sometimes.....no matter if its in [d], d or if i manually shift it from 2-3. it is intermittent and doesnt do it ALL the time just like 6 out of 10 times. Now, when it does it, usually i can tap the gas pedal hard and it will shift...sometimes, other times i just let off the gas completely and it will eventually shift. Oh and when i downshift from 3-2 and then upshift from 2-3 its fine.....car drives fine, and when it DOES shift, it doesnt slip and feels good. Anyway, i dont think its the tranny, but i dont know. What would be good to check...i read in other posts that guys said to check the tps...could someone explain to me why? Any help would be great.

a friend of mine talked to someone who says that it sounds like the "shifter position sensor" might have crapped out. Could that be my problem and where is it located?

Larry,
Try replacing the 3-2 control solenoid. It's the one at the front of the valvebody.
When you had the pan down to replace the shift soleniod, was there any black residue in the bottom of the pan? Trans-Go shift kits are notorious for taking out the 3-4 clutches...Not to mention the 2-4 band.
are there any codes stored? Might be a good idea to have it scanned. If no codes are present, I'd try the 3-2 solenoid first. If that doesn't fix it, I'd try a different valvebody (WITHOUT THE "TRANS-SLOP" stuff in it!)
Pleasae tell me you didn't have someone install the TG heavy "load release springs" in the 3-4's. Any transmission builder with any knowledge knows to throw them away when they rebuild a transmission. The weaker factory springs cause the 3-4 clutches to burn up...TG supplies STIFFER spring!

just so i understand...why would i want to change the 3-2 control solenoid when it doesnt have any problem at all with the downshift. It will shift down if i hit the pedal or if i do it manually...and usually when i have it in d (not od) and i bring it down to 2nd...and then back to d it shifts down then back up just like its supposed to

no i dont recall seeing any black residue in the pan.
i took it to 'vatozone' to have the codes read and the guy didnt get anything....he used a jumper and i guess a light was supposed to flash or something. and i have since reset my computer.

as far as this rebuild...i dont know exactly what was put in it...i bought it from a guy here in town. i dont think its a problem with the tranny cuz i had a very similar problem with the 2-3 shift on my stock tranny that started looooong before there was a shift kit on that car.

the car drives great, pulls hard, shifts firm, even the 2-3 (when it does shift)

Um...The name 3-2 solenoid is a little deceiving, because it affects upshifts also.

you didnt change your rear end gears did you? I know that when I went from my 2.73's to 3.73's it did the same thing, even after programing, because they didnt fix the shift points. Just wondering.

i ran datamaster on my car and watched what it was doing...well when i had d4 (OD) selected, and i was just driving normal, it revved up in second and datamaster showed that the active gear was d3 and it was still in second just revving up. wtf?

any suggestions?

That's because the scanner picks up computer commands. The computer was commanding 3rd gear, but your transmission isn't capable of making a 2-3 shift. The "reving up" you're feeling is the 3-4 clutches freewheeling because they're burnt.

Frank

so if those clutches are burnt, it wont ever shift into 3rd?

At first it will, but the more they become damaged, the less it will...Finally, yes, you'll lose 3rd and 4th all together.
